80GB PS3 Does NOT Have PS2 Hardware

PS3 80GB Pack Shot - No PS2 Hardware

We all know the current US version of the PS3 has the built in PS2 hardware for backwards compatibility, where the European version does not. Well, the rest of the world looks to be getting the shaft with the 80GB version of the PS3.

Check out the zoomed and rotated image from the 80GB PS3 pack-shot sent to us by Sony. If you can’t read it, here’s what it says:

This product has limited backward compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software.

Yeah, the box for the 60GB PS3 doesn’t say that. Reading further (text is hard to read here) shows that system software updates will enable more titles for the 80GB PS3.

Really makes me happy I have my v1 PS3 with the built in PS2 hardware. Let us know what you think of the change in the comments.

man this is lame. It might just be telling users that backwards compatability is gimped (which it is) at the moment.

Yeah, it’s always better to go with hardware emulation when possible. There’s still some big issues with huge games for the European PS3.

I’m sure the removal of PS2 hardware has a major impact on the price drop.

is there any noticable difference when running PS2 games on a PS3 that has the PS2’s Emotion Engine and a PS3 that doesn’t have the PS2’s Emotion Engine?

I really think you are reading far in to this. The PS3 backward compatibility is limited even with the PS2 hardware in it, certain games don’t work right or can’t be displayed properly in HD until you put in the patches. This is probably what they mean by that.

Means nothing. Even the v1 has to rely on software emulation so the point is mute.
Besides this is the PS3 right? To play PS3 games? So many gamers keep all their consoles hooked up anyway.

Oldest Gamer. The only thing is that PS2 still has good games that have come out or are coming out. For example, GOWII or some of those games that are only for PS2.

I would post my thoughts of Sony right now, but I don’t want this blog to become a flame war.

I’m very dissapointed, I haven’t touched Sony since the PS1 , and missed out on a lot of PS2 games such as “Ratchet and Clank”.

Went out and bought it and it suffers from the most horrendous of slowdown right from the start :(

@PS3 Owner: If you just bought a 60GB PS3 in the US, it DOES have the Emotion Engine built in. If you’re outside the US, the PAL PS3 never had it to begin with.
