Aion doesn’t reinvent the genre at all. It isn’t perfect, but what developer NCsoft has done, and done quite well, is taken major elements from other games and improved upon them. Yes, there is a huge leveling curve involved, and yes, you should be prepared to invest a good amount of time playing it – but underneath the wings, clawed feet, and girly looking characters is an solid MMORPG experience well worth trying if you’re a fan of the genre. There is something for everyone here – MMO vets and newcomers alike will have no problem finding something to like about Aion.
Well, it appears the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 will no longer be the beneficiary of dedicated servers.
A EuroGamer story states that developer Infinity Ward will roll out a new proprietary service, called IWNet, which will focus on matchmaking. More after the jump.
“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.” – Galileo Galilei, 1564-1642.
A very old saying that for us wine lovers represent the poetic passion that we feel when pop the cork of out favorite bottle, take in the nose and close our eyes as we put the glass to our lips. And somewhere along the line a wine enthusiast like myself had the idea to turn that passion into a video game. Genius. I myself am very excited about this upcoming PC release. And for those of us who believe that the best wines still come from France you will be glad to know that the game takes place in some of the countries most important wine regions. Slated for an October 2009 release (the same time as France’s harvest), those with interest will not have to wait all that long.
To celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the fine folks over at Telltale Games are giving away the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island for free of the PC. Can’t beat that price, so head on over and grab yourself a copy. It’s today only, so hurry up.
Tales of Monkey Island was one of my favorite adventure games growing up and the series revamp is pretty fun. How can you go wrong with free anyway?
As if we didn’t have enough time sinks, being gamers and all, now we’ll have another MMO to keep us busy for days, weeks or months on end. NCSoft’s new MMO, which has been out in Korea for a while now, has been certified gold and is all ready for its release date next month. Whenever I load up Steam I see that the pre-order for this title is near the top of the sales charts. That’s a good thing, right? Will it be the next hopeful to challenge World of Warcraft’s supremacy in the MMO market?
Consider this: Quite a few MMOs over the last four years have been labeled “WoW killers”. When I used to read the WoW forums on a daily basis (losing IQ points in the process, I’m sure), it seemed to be the “in” thing for each MMO that comes along to be declared a “WoW killer”. Yet, to date, nothing has toppled the king of the hill.
I’m hopeful that another game will come along that will give Blizzard’s baby a run for its money – competition between MMOs can only be good for the gamers that play them. I’ve quit WoW and don’t plan on going back, but will Aion be the next MMO for me? I’m not a PVP-er, and Aion seems to have a strong PVP aspect, so we’ll see. Since I haven’t been able to get into the beta events, hopefully they’ll have a free trial download once the game launches. All I know is NCSoft games always look absolutely amazing. I guess we’ll see what happens come September 22.
Left 4 Dead has become one of my favorite games. It’s funny because when the demo first came out, it scared the crap out of me. I remember falling down into the apartment in No Mercy and standing in a dark room with only a flashlight on the gun and ugly zombies staring me in the face having no idea what I was supposed to do. Let’s just say that I didn’t last 5 minutes before I turned the game off and left. A couple of months later a close friend was interested in playing so I gave it another try and I was hooked. Talking to friends while doing the campaign makes all the difference, at least to me. It raised my brave meter very high. After a month of playing all the campaigns many times, boredom set in as it was getting hard to choose a map, as we had played them all over and over.
Enter the world of L4D mods. At the urging of yet another friend, we downloaded and tried a couple of game map mods and I wanted to share them with you. The first is called Death Aboard. One of the favorite mods going around, this campaign is really good and really long.
Won’t you be my neighbor? My Sims 3 neighbor that is. Even though the game has been out for two months, I’ve been playing during that time so I can give you some of my gameplay insight. You need to know a little background (yes you really do). I played original Sims for a few months before Sims 2 came out. Sims 2 was just awesome all around. I played in Strangetown every night for months. My obsession was getting the guys abducted and trying to get twins (with no cheats). I had quite the soap opera going because I tend to shake things up in the Sim world. I since bought every expansion pack and my love of Sims increased with each one. My game playing turned into creating story games with Sims that represented forum members called Sim House (think Big Brother). Enter Sims 3. I was excited about the new possibilities of being able to access the entire neighborhood and I wondered what kind of story games I could create.
If you know me, you know I love things listed in a decreasing sequential order with the most prevalent being last, also called a “countdown”. Check out the latest top 10 which reflects on some of the most important PC games that helped define a genre. Let us know your opinions as there will certainly be some debate.
My very brief experience with PC mods in SF IV have not been positive. Everything I have seen so far is an attempt to look up Chun Li’s skirt at her va jay jay or for some God forsaken reason have the Ryu vs Sagat rematch all nude. A clever and non-sexual deviant made this video. There may be some hope for the human race just yet. I bring to you: The Battle of the Rocky III Bosses.
EA had a rather lengthy beta period for Battlefield Heroes, their browser-based cartoonish Battlefield game. It’s now out of beta and available for you to play for free if you’re a Windows user. No Mac love from EA, even though it’s a browser-based game. For shame.
While the game is free to play, you can buy Battlefunds in the amount of 700 Battlefunds for $5 in real money. You can use the Battlefunds to customize your character with new clothes, experience point boosters, and other goodies. Getting weapons and upgrades will come through playing, so you can’t just buy your way to the top. Kudos on that move, EA.
I’d love to play this, but my everyday machine is a MacBook Pro. Maybe I’ll fire it up once in a while when I’m working on my Windows desktop, but those times are few and far between.
