EA to release Arcade version of Madden NFL

EA Logo

EA will release a simpler version of the popular football game called ”Madden NFL Arcade”, which features “pick-up and play” 5-on-5 games.

The game appears to be more casual compared to its more realistic, and complex siblings. Players get four downs to march 60 yards and score a touchdown.  The first team to 30 wins. Players can also use “Game Changers,” special power-ups to give players the upper hand, such as freezing an opponent’s receiver or turning off their passing icons.

Madden NFL Arcade will sport visuals similar to what EA used for the Nintendo Wii release of Madden NFL 10, and will sell as a download on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network for $15 this December.

The release of Madden NFL Arcade is also going to try and address one of the sports genre’s biggest issues: As controls for sports simulations bet more and more complicated, it gets harder and harder for newer players to catch on.

Firmware 3.0 Expands PS3 Download Queue

PS3 Slim

I discovered one of the lesser known features of the PS3 firmware update v3.0 today while setting up my new PS3 Slim. While re-downloading all of my PSN games and content, I noticed that I was queuing up an unusually large amount of data. Upon inspecting the Download Management section, I found that I had 29 items in the download queue. That’s a lot more than was previously allowed.

The last time I downloaded such a large amount of data was a few months back when I hit the wall at 15 items in the download queue. Now with firmware 3.0, you can queue up metric tons of content from the PSN and let your PS3 download them for days on end. Not the coolest of features, but it’s a nice touch.

Check back tomorrow as I detail my full switch from my launch 60GB PS3 to the new PS3 Slim.

Don Mode is Coming

godfather-ii-dons_view

No, not Don Mattingly, but it might involve baseball bats.

No, not Don Quixote, but there may be some insanity.

It’s a little bit of both worlds, it’s Don Mode for Godfather II, a free downloadable patch available the day the game is released, that will give players the Don Control multiplayer mode. You’ll have two players as opposing Don’s able to recruit other players and wage war on each other, with their single player in-game currency on the table.  A few things that bug me about this are:

  1. Why a patch on the first day of release?
  2. Everyone will want to be playing as the Don.

But overall it sounds like a nice twist tying the multiplayer and single player campaign together and throwing a bit of strategy into open-world chaos.  Press release is beyond the jump.

Microsoft has announced that they are bringing back the greatness that was Deal of the Week on a regular basis, starting today.  The content will be slashed 25-50 percent and will consist of arcade titles, game add-ons, Xbox originals and more.

Braid will be the first titled available at a discounted price.  The critically acclaimed title will be available for 800 Microsoft Points, a 33 percent discount.  The discount is good for one week only so get it while you can.

Other upcoming deals will include game add-ons for Ninja Gaiden II and Project Gotham Racing 4 as well as the original Fable.

Deal of the Week is only available to Xbox Live Gold members.  If you are a Silver member, maybe it’s time to finally fork over that cash and upgrade to Gold status.

The Lost and Damned Inspired Avatar Clothing

avatarmoto

When you were young, were you one of those kids that always wanted to dress up as a biker?  Well, now it’s possible because Microsoft has released GTA IV The Lost and Damned inspired Avatar clothing available on Xbox Live.  The list of biker gear includes leather jackets, leggings and even a skull ring, my personal favorite.

Hopefully Microsoft keeps giving us game inspired clothing for free.  How cool would it be to equip your Avatar with a Ghostbusters inspired proton pack?  We can always dream.

As always, the clothing is free to download and it’s marked with a gold star so you know it’s fresh.  The list is long so check it out after the jump.

Halo Wars Demo Breaks Record

halowars

Microsoft now has confirmation that it has done a fine job marketing Halo Wars even before the game has been released.  The demo has officially set the one day record for most downloads of a demo over Xbox Live.

The demo was first released on February 5th and has amassed over 2 million downloads in its first five days.  The demo gives players a taste of the campaign as well as a single skirmish map playable against the A.I.  The demo is now available for Xbox Live Silver members as well.

In celebration of this grand achievement, you may now go download the third installment of the seven-part documentary video series titled Strategy on Xbox.  The video gives gamers an inside look at how Halo Wars was created and also provides game tips.  It is available on the Xbox Live Marketplace or visit xbox.com/halo for everything Halo related.

It will be interesting to see if the hype surrounding the game turns into huge sales numbers.  Have any of you had a change of heart after playing the demo?

Rock Band Will Get 5000 Songs… Eventually

The intarwebs slightly erupted with the news that the Rock Band franchise would have 5000 playable songs by the end of 2009. Turns out someone slightly misinterpreted a quote from Alex Rigopulos, the head honcho over at Harmonix.

In an interview with Ars Technica during this year’s CES, Rigopolos said that the library would go from 500 to 5000 songs “in the coming years”. Billboard took it and ran with it, saying we’d have 5000 songs to play this year.

If you do the math, we’d have to get roughly 100 songs per week to catch that mark for 2009. That’s a bit absurd and I’m surprised the people at Billboard didn’t figure that one out. So before you get all excited about insane amounts of DLC, just remember that the big 5000 number won’t be happened for a while.

New Avatar Sport Shirts

This week we have a slew of sporty shirts that are “European National Football Teams.”  There are 18 shirts in all.  I wasn’t going to put every single shirt on my Avatar so I decided to pick a single country out of the hat.  Now my Avatar looks just like an Ikea employee and so can yours.

It’s too bad the shirts aren’t American football teams.  I can’t wait for the day that I get to sport a Minnesota Vikings jersey on my Avatar.

A full list of the countries is located after the jump and like always, the new clothing is free and marked with a gold star to signify its freshness.

Bruce Springsteen Track Pack Free Download Out Now for GH:WT

Two great Bruce songs, “Born to Run” and “My Lucky Day” are out now on GH:WT for the price of free.  I heard a rumor that after Feb. 4th, it will cost money, but don’t hold me on that.  Either way, just DL now. You can add it to your queue by clicking here in case you don’t want to forget.

More New Threads for Your Avatar

This week’s set of Avatar clothing is loaded with various polo and jacket combinations.  There is even a fancy set of red suspenders with plaid pants.  It never hurts to sport suspenders, it’s hard enough for kids these days to keep there pants up near their belly button with just a belt.

Don’t worry though, whatever clothes you choose to wear is alright with us, there is no such thing as a tacky looking Avatar.  I promise.

For the dudes:

  • Striped Polo Shirt
  • Open Neck Cardigan
  • Check Jacket with Polo
  • Striped Jacket with Polo
  • Embroidered Pants
  • Suspenders with High Pants

For the chicks:

  • Lavender Polo Shirt
  • Hacking Jacket
  • Chinos with Belt
  • Scarlet Pumps
  • Rainy Day Boots

As always, the new clothing is free and signified with a gold star so you know it’s fresh.
