Buying A DSi XL Fatty McFatterson?

You probably want to pick that toast up with your grubby Vienna sausage fingers and eat it don’t you?  Well, admire it first, then eat it.  The DSI XL was recently given the release date of March 28th of this year, with Nintendo giving the public a (cue heavy metal music) EXTREME edition of their hand-held DSi console. Going for $190 dollars, this puppy clocks in with a big juicy 4.2 inch screen compared to the midget sized 3 inch screens of it’s predecessors (comparison pic later).

Stop the Presses – I am Excited for Wii Games

My Wii is the most expensive piece of electronics in my house that never gets used. I’ll fire up the console for review games if needed, but otherwise, it sits there untouched for months on end. But after Nintendo’s media event in San Francisco yesterday, I’m truly excited for a couple games coming this Spring/Summer.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is shipping May 23rd and Metroid: Other M is shipping June 27. Finally, games I want to play on my Wii. I don’t know about all of you, but in my eyes, there are potential Game of the Year candidates here with these two titles.

I’ll be sure to charge up my Wii remotes, finally, come mid May. I haven’t had enough waggle in my life the past few months, anyway.

Review: Dragonball: Revenge of King Piccolo

The Dragonball series has been out for quite some time and in its era has spawned countless games. None of them ever were critically acclaimed titles, but they always seemed to do the cartoon series justice by including most of the main characters and an art style that was consistent with the animation seen on the television show. I used to watch the cartoon series back in college, usually on a Sunday afternoon, hungover on the couch. It provided mindless entertainment with a slight sense of humor that was perfect as I tried to overcome numerous shots and games of beer pong from the night before. Dragonball: Revenge of King Piccolo has its its ups and downs. Does it have enough ups to provide you with at least a couple hours of mindless fun? Hit the jump to find out.

Review: Dead Space: Extraction

DeadSpace_Cover

When House of the Dead: Overkill was released for the Nintendo Wii, older gamers rejoiced, finally seeing some more mature titles on the mostly kid-friendly console.  However, it almost seemed too forced with the characters swearing and cursing to the point where you wanted to slap them in their face to shut up.  Although a good game, the game just didn’t satisfy my adult, light-gun craving.  It was, well, Overkill.  EA and Visceral Games is hoping to up the ante a bit with their release of Dead Space: Extraction, the prequel to the graphically intense, 3rd person shooter Dead Space, released last year on both the 360 and PS3.  Did they hit the mark in keeping the creepy, mature theme of the original, or is this just another sorry attempt at an adult game on a system targeted for kids?  Read on and we shall see!

NESynth: 8-Bit Greatness

NESynth Logo Screen

We’ve all sat there playing the classic Nintendo system and wanted to desperately mash up, modify, and create our own great 8-bit tunes coming out of the TV speakers.  Well, with the help of NESynth (an iPod touch/iPhone app) you will be able to do just that, create your own classic Nintendo-like music themes.

At first glance of the application, you see that the interface is just a very simple keyboard, with a few virtual knobs above that to change octave, waveform, and sound effect.  When you eventually dive deeper into the app, you’ll see just how versatile this little bad boy is.  Add in another keyboard on top of that, and you create awesome 8-bit power chords that make Eddie Van Halen run off into the sunset and give his game away for free.

Star Wars Saga Headed To Virtual Console

Super Star Wars Screen

Watch out Luke! Don’t get too close to that Sarlacc sand penis!

Not just any Star Wars saga, the Super Star Wars saga!  Nintendo has just announced that the Super Star Wars series is headed to the Wii Virtual Console this week beginning with the first Super Star Wars game from the SNES era.  I reported previously about the unknown future of the X-wing vs. TIE Fighter series in this post, but is this the release of past Star Wars content president of LucasArts Darrel Rodriguez alluded to?

I really don’t know?  And I really don’t care, any and all Star Wars additions to my gaming catalog are good ones (minus that N64 abortion of a game called Battle for Naboo).  I skipped the SNES era for some strange reason, so the Super Star Wars series wasn’t even on my radar at the time.  All I know is, I missed out on playing through the original movie trilogy, battling Mos Eisley cantina patrons, as well as slicing off huge sand penises (pictured above) with my lightsaber.

Review: Wii Sports Resort

Wii Sports Resort Screen

Wii Sports may be one of the best selling pack-in games of all time, but it’s also been labeled a glorified tech demo by some. The games were simplistic and easily glitched (I can bowl a 290-300 every time laying down on my couch). Wii Sports Resort takes the fun gameplay elements from the original, adds Wii Motion Plus and a ton of new sports, and makes for a damn fun experience.

E309: Scenes from the Nintendo Press Briefing

E309 Nintendo Press Conference Wii Vitality Sensor

Nintendo held their E3 09 Press Briefing at Club Nokia, next door the LA Convention Center. It’s a much smaller venue than those used by both Microsoft and Sony, and the stage reflected that cramped feeling. The screens were nice, showing off HD video even though none of Nintendo’s products work in HD.

Check out all the pictures from Sony’s E309 Media Briefing.

E309: Thoughts from the Nintendo Press Briefing

E309 Nintendo Press Conference

I wasn’t expecting much from Nintendo this year at E3, but there were a few thing shown off that did surprise and impress me. Then there was the new peripheral announcement that made me audibly groan when it was revealed. Were they able to pull off a decent show? Read on, my friends.

Nintendo Relives the Past With Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii

Metroid SS

Can someone tell Nintendo we want new games, not rehashed product with motion controls? The casual gaming giant today announced the upcoming release of Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii. Featuring new versions of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes cominbed with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, you’ll get a lot of Samus action.

It’s without saying that they’re all solid games, but why no new Metroid content? I’ll tell you why: because people will buy anything Nintendo gives them. This new Trilogy is going to sell over a million units because it’s the new hot shit from Nintendo.

Personally, I’m not buying it. I’ve played all three and don’t need to go back and play the first two with motion controls. Sure, having them on one disc is cool, but Nintendo still has a long way to go if they really do want to appease the core gamers. My bet is they don’t care at this point.
