PS2 Backwards Compatibility Coming to ALL PS3’s?

ps3-upright

Sony decided to drop BC from all of their models to the chagrin of gamers everywhere.  Unless you had a near launch 20 GB, 60 GB, or 80 GB console, you were shit out of luck if you wanted to play God of War on your PS3. Sony has patented Emotion Engine Emulation, which is a way for PS3’s to be able to read PS2 data without the PS2 chip in place. To oversimplify things, it would allow PS2 games to be played on PS3’s without any kind of modding. There is no guarantee that this is the reason they have this patent, but it would sure make a lot of sense and a lot of people happy. Click here for the in depth reasoning behind the new tech.

Review: Naruto Ultimate Ninja 4: Shippūden (PS2)

NARUTO HAIRSTYLES: BANE OF COSPLAY STYLISTS WORLDWIDE.

Everybody loves ninjas. Even pirates secretly love ninjas. So any series that gives you an opportunity to play as a ninja deserves a look. I’ve read Naruto since its U.S. debut in Shonen Jump.  And although I’ve fallen off the scene in the past few months, I still get a better sense of the Manga in Shippūden than in Ultimate Ninja 3. Something that is largely missing from many Manga-based games.

So let’s jump in as see how it stacks up against past releases yeah?

Microsoft Downplays Sony’s Big Announcement

PS2

It is being construed as the big announcement that wasn’t. Many of us knew a price drop was coming, just not for a console that is basically defunct. It did not take Microsoft a long time to get their 2 cents in:

“This move from Sony at the end of the PS2’s life cycle is not unexpected,” Chris Lewis, VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft, told GamesIndustry.biz.

“We believe, however, that the future lies in the growth of current generation consoles and Xbox 360, as the fastest growing games console last year, with sales up over 80 per cent, will continue to drive the market.

“Xbox 360 has clearly demonstrated that the combination of the right price, blockbuster games as well as the market-leading broad connected entertainment content available through Xbox Live will continue to resonate with the ever growing needs of today’s consumers,” added Lewis.

I can’t say I disagree with MS here. Price cutting the PS2 is a nice gesture but a gesture nonetheless. The PS2 was a landmark system that millions of people have logged billions of hours playing. I do not know how Sony can possibly tell people that a price cut on a PS2 is better than a PS3 which has been putting out amazing titles left and right, especially when there are many people who want it but they cannot spend the money right now. Once the 360 became what it is, the Xbox was an afterthought. Sony should at least move on and focus on the present and not dwell on their past laurels.

PS2 Now $99, Sony Misses the Boat

PS2

Sony announced today that the PS2 is now priced at $99. While it’s big news to have a console under that $100 mark, dropping the price of a last generation console isn’t what Sony needs.

The PS3 has been on the market for about 2.5 years now. It’s time to focus on the current and the future, which is the PS3. Sales of that console are what matters most right now, and dropping the price is what is going to spur sales. Across the board, press, analysts, and consumers are all calling for a PS3 price cut, but Sony seems to have missed the boat and dropped the price of their last generation product instead.

Not sure how much this is going to spur the sales of the PS2. Month over month, the sales have been on a decline according to NPD data. If Sony is going for profitability in their overall games division, I don’t think this is going to be the answer.

Retro Review – Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2

r2rbr22

Developer: Point Of View Publisher: Midway

Release Date: 2000 (Various) Platforms: PlayStation, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Game Boy Advance

When you think about it, the boxing genre has the most hot-or-cold track record. Series such as Punch Out! and Fight Night (previously Knockout Kings) currently represent the upper echelon of efforts. The few barely capable titles (Facebreaker, Victorious Boxer) represent the very thin crust between the awful and the exceptional. The titles that qualify as awful need not be mentioned here. You know who they are.

*AHEM* Don King *

And then of course there is Ready 2 Rumble. It’s been just under ten years since the last release. I had actually written this series off until I heard of the new chapter Ready 2 Rumble: Revolution appearing on the Wii in March. So I felt it fitting to take a look back at what Midway had given us the last time around.

Review: SingStar Country (PS2)

If you’ve never played SingStar on the PS2, it’s a karaoke rhythm game where you get points for singing the proper notes to your favorite songs. The previous editions have been enormous hits throughout the world. To add to the great series, Sony recently released an expansion for Country music.

SingStar games feature the original videos of each song where available. Things here are pretty much standard for the series; there’s not much needed in terms of graphics for a karaoke game. Sound-wise, this is the area that SingStar is designed to shine, and it works very well. Each song has terrific original sound for you to rock out with.

PlayStation Brand Posts Solid Quarter

PS3

Sony posted their sales data for the first quarter of their fiscal year or 2008. Strong sales of hardware and software have made the PlayStation division profitable for the first quarter in a long time.

The PS3 saw sales of 1.56 million units, up from 0.70 million a year ago. Software for the PS3 went through the roof selling 4.7 million last year while boasting 22.8 million units in Q1 08. Good news for Sony with the PS3 definitely picking up on all fronts.

The PSP didn’t do too bad either, rising to 3.72 million units sold in Q1 2008 compaired to last year’s 2.13 million. Software rose as well, showing 11.8 million units against Q1 2007’s 9.8 million.

The PS2, on the other hand, saw drops in both hardware and sofware sales. Not surprising, given the increase in adoption of the PS3. Hardware went down to 1.51 million from 2.66 million and software dropped to 19.3 million from 31.1 million.

Overall, Sony had a pretty strong quarter. With a lot of great games coming for both the PS3 and PSP, I can see this trend continuing for a while. I wonder how long it’ll take them to get profitable on the PS3…

Review: Ratchet & Clank Size Matters (PS2)

Size Matters Screen 1

Ratchet & Clank Size Matters originally appeared on the PSP last year and was a pretty big hit. The series has always been a lot of fun and the PSP port was no different. Ratchet & Clank scaled well to the handheld. In the wake of the game’s success, Sony decided to port the PSP title over the PS2. Sadly, it didn’t work as anticipated. Here is a breakdown of some of the facets of Ratchet & Clank Size Matters for the PS2:

Presentation and Graphics: I expected a lot more graphically from the PS2 port of the game. Essentially, Ratchet & Clank Size Matters looks exactly the same on the PS2 as it did on the PSP. It doesn’t look like any of the textures were enhanced. Many environments and objects are very blocky and low resolution, even for a PS2 title. Because you’re playing on a much larger screen, these low-res textures are more evident. 5 of 10
