I was honestly excited when Sony announced their adhocParty software coming to the US. I downloaded it this morning and got ready to play some Gran Turismo PSP online against people all over the world. After firing up the software on my PS3 and clicking any of the buttons, I was given the above error message. Yup, you need a wired internet connection to use adhocParty. Those of us who connect to the internet with the built in wireless in the PS3 are screwed.
The funny part is that if you click the Information button, the PS3 opens the web browser and tries to display the manuals (which gave me an error message that “There is not enough memory. The window content was replaced with a blank page.”) So at least something works over wireless internet. The only thing I can hope a this point is that Sony will update adhocParty. Running ethernet cables isn’t very feasible in my house right now. I guess my dreams of playing Gran Turismo against kids from Guam are squashed.
BioWare today announced the next installment of Dragon Age: Origins DLC, Return to Ostagar. Set for release on all platforms this Holiday, fans of the game will have even more content for one of the best RPG’s of the year. From the press release:
Return to Ostagar, BioWare’s next thread in the Dragon Age: Origins tapestry, summons players to a new quest in which they will return to the fateful battleground in Ostagar where the Grey Wardens were nearly wiped out. Players will discover King Cailan’s top-secret political agenda and go behind enemy lines to revisit a place that many feared had been lost to history.
I haven’t had a chance to play Dragon Age: Origins yet, but Karl thinks it’s the bees knees. Yeah, I just wrote that. Don’t judge me. So save up $4.99 to buy this new content pack pretty soon.
One of Sony’s big advantages with the PSN is the ability to play online for free. At an recent Media/Investor Conference, the company revealed that it would look to extend a subscription model to the PSN. The internets got all up in arms that the PSN would soon go the way of Xbox Live, forcing your to pony up heard earned cash to play online. Fortunately, that isn’t the case. Speaking to VG247, Kaz Hirai set the record straight:
SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network. Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.
There you have it. You’ll continue to be able to play online for free. The subscription model is probably referring to features like Qore, where you can get extra content for opening your wallet. I have a feeling most people will opt to pay nothing and roll with the PSN as-is. I’ll wait and see what these premium content and services are before making a decision, but I already subscribe to Qore, so who knows.
If you went out and preordered Battlefield: Bad Company 2, today is the start of the beta on PS3 where you’ll be able to tool around the multiplayer. I know Steve is going to be firing it up tonight and bringing you his thoughts really soon, so if you want to hear what he has to say, keep checking back.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the console multiplayer landscape shapes up this Spring. No doubt a large portion of people will consistently play Modern Warfare 2, but I have a feeling Bad Company 2 is going to be a strong multiplayer game and will pull some people away from the CoD giant. Only time will tell, so for now, preorder the game on PS3 and get in the Beta.
Yep, you read that right. Modern Warfare 2 has the best first five days of an entertainment product ever. Let that sink in for a second. Raking in a whopping $550 million over the first five days, here’s what Modern Warfare 2 beat out (from the press release):
The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million)
The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)
The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, $500 million)
The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($66.4 million)
The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows ($220 million)
The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, $310 million)
Pretty damn impressive. There was no doubt this was going to be a huge success, but breaking all these records is crazy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play some Spec Ops.
It’s been a long time now since I’ve played anything on the Wii. The last thing I played was The Conduit for review back in the summer. There just really aren’t any games I want to play for the system. Sure, New Super Mario Bros. Wii just came out, but I don’t have three people here on a regular basis who will want to play, making it yet another party game that would go unused in my house. The system is collecting a ton of dust, but one game just got sent to us that will change everything: We Cheer.
Don’t get the wrong idea. I will not be playing this game. Namco Bandai sent it over for review and after a couple quick emails among the Loot Ninja staff, no one wanted to jump on this title. My wife, who was on the dance team in high school, actually asked me about buying this one, so she’s going to play this and guest review the game. The system will finally get some usage, albeit still not by me.
With an deluge of amazing games for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this Holiday season, are you even looking at your Wii for your gaming time? Maybe during Christmas I’ll bust out Wii Sports Resort or Punch Out with family and friends, but I don’t see myself turning the system on for my personal gaming for a long time. How about all of you out there?
Tony Hawk: Ride is the first of its kind. You’ll be able to get off your ass and make a fool of yourself on a fake plastic skateboard in your living room. I’m sure many of you are on the fence, given the price and needing another peripheral. Check out some grinding gameplay and see if it looks cool enough for your tastes.
Buzz! Quiz World is the latest in the trivia series to grace the PS3. I played a few of the games back on the PS2, but this was my first foray on the PS3 and the first with the wireless buzzers. If you’re a trivia buff on the PS3, this game is for you. With over 5000 questions on disc and the MyBuzz online service, you’ll be hard pressed to not keep coming back.
I use Facebook a lot. Multiple times a day. It’s great for catching up with friends, sharing information, and connecting through multiple sources with Facebook Connect. I do all of this on my mobile devices and laptop. But in its current form, Facebook on consoles is useless for me. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely see the potential there, but right now it’s pointless.
There’s a ton of big new releases today for your shopping needs. Assassin’s Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Tony Hawk Ride, God of War Collection, and LittleBigPlanet for PSP highlight the show. Are you buying any the big names today? I’m definitely grabbing Left 4 Dead 2 and the God of War Collection this week. Assassin’s Creed 2 is on my “must-buy” list, but it’s going to have to wait a couple weeks until I have more time.
What about you? Which games are you picking up this week or adding to your Christmas list? Who wants to shoot zombies with me on 360?
