PSPgo Out of Lives, No Longer in Production

I guess the 1up mushrooms ran out for the PSPgo. Rumor swirled yesterday that Sony’s digital-only handheld had ceased production runs. Today, the Japanese company confirmed the information to AV Watch. While it was sexy to look at and hold, it just didn’t meet consumer demands. The PSP-3000 will continue to be sold as the NGP/PSP2 ramps up for its launch hopefully this Holiday season.

This isn’t the most surprising news as the highly criticized handheld never caught hold with a mass audience. Personally, I’m all for a digitally distributed world for my handheld devices, but Sony never gave the system the support it so desperately needed. Many titles didn’t hit the PSN at the same time as retail and some just flat out missed the boat altogether (I’m looking at you, Kingdom Hearts).

I think we can all now say that the PSPgo was failed experiment that will go down in the hallowed halls of video gaming with the Virtual Boy as systems that just never hit their mark. Goodnight sweet prince.
