With Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops both dropping on us in the past few months/day, I have spent the majority of my gaming time on the FPS circuit. This post is not comparing the two for the sole reason of not wanting to start the inevitable flame war. This is a commentary on the Top 5 people I just cannot stand playing with/against in the online community. Whether it’d be Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network, they are there and unfortunately not going anywhere.
You might have noticed something yesterday when you booted up your Xbox 360. If you haven’t, go ahead and connect to Xbox Live and you’ll be prompted to download and install the new dashboard software.
What you’ll find is that things look a whole lot whiter, a whole lot easier, and a lot more dumbed down.
Wow. I am so creative with my post names. Doesn’t that shit look a lot like the “What Are You Playing?” headline?
Windowlicker had a great idea last week (as well as a kick ass screen name) about showing off our backlogs to one another and listing off all the games we have yet to finish. It’s a chance to bond with one another.
I’d hate to just come out and say “I have the most games”, but I’m sure there are a few of you that have more. When you look at my backlog and see Resistance: Fall of Man and Far Cry 2 (a PS3 launch title and an open world game a few years old)? Come on. Plus, how in the hell did I get five hours into Final Fantasy XIII and just stop? I was almost past the tutorial bullshit (only three more hours to go on that) and could actually get into the “real” game. So guess what, hit the jump to see how much I need to game for the next couple of years.

Like you didn’t see this coming. In it’s first full week of eligibility, Halo: Reach is the most played Xbox 360 game over XBL. It dethrones MW2 which is still impressive considering it was launch about 10 months ago. The questions is, how long can Reach reign supreme? Cop out answer: a long time. Hit the jump for the list.
The final DLC installment for Alan Wake (before Alan Wake 2 – if there is one – is released) is set to hit your dashboard of choice on October 12th, 2010 for the low price of 560 MS points ($7 bucks).
Remedy has already stated that “The Writer” DLC will be the last downloadable episode for Alan Wake, with a few trailers hinting at “End The Nightmare”. Well, that would mean (if we’re going by TV standards) that this DLC would be the first season’s finale. I can think of a few great TV shows out there that had horrible finales (Seinfield comes to mind), but there’s also some legendary ones (The Bob Newhart Show).
But, seeing as Microsoft hasn’t signed on for a sequel to Alan Wake (even though it’s already written and thought out), this could be the end (the series finale) for Mr. Wake. This could be our last glimpse at those memorable Northwestern themed characters we’ve all come to know and love. I guess we’ll find out in the coming months whether the series is renewed for another “season”.
If they are basing Alan Wake’s success by these DLC’s, then count me in. I want more Wake. The disc-based game was great, “The Signal” DLC was a step down, but we’ll see if Remedy steps it up and brings the noise in this next “Writer” installment.
According to the ever knowledgeable Major Nelson, Halo: Reach was only the third highest played on Xbox Live last week, despite the huge opening sales week. Beating the game were Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 in first and second place, respectively.
The week of reporting started September 13th, the day before Reach was released, so there was ample time for the game to be played on Xbox 360 while connected to Xbox Live. I am a bit surprised that Halo 3 still reigns in higher. I fully expected a large majority of Halo fans to hop over to the new game on day one. Maybe it’s the state of the economy or maybe people just like their familiar maps and weapons.
Next week should be interesting with the Live Activity charts. Will Reach take the top spot, or will Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 still out-rank Bungie’s latest? Only time will tell.
[UPDATE – Turns out the good Major isn’t the best with Excel, as an error in reporting resulting in Halo: Reach coming in third place. In fact, it actually came in second place, just behind Modern Warfare 2. Also, the game was the number one played game on Live since it’s release, so you can expect it to take the number one spot next week, just like Ludacris.]
You want to be on the bleeding edge of new console updates, don’t ya? Sure you do! Microsoft is bringing back their Xbox Live Preview Program to give you a chance at trying out the next version of the Xbox 360 Dashboard before it hits the general public. All you have to do is head over to their website and sign up.
A few things to note — you’ll need your Serial and Console ID numbers, so you might need to be in front of your Xbox 360 if you want to sign up. Also, if you get into the Preview Program, you will NOT be receiving a Kinect sensor unit to test. This is just for the Dashboard. Finally, you will not be able to hop into Party Chat with those who do not have the new Dashboard preview. So if you wanted to party-up with friends for Reach, you better all be on the Preview Program of you won’t be able to hear each other.
I’m looking forward to a more streamlined Dash on the 360. The current dash is a bit cluttered, so I’m hoping it gets cleaned up a bit. I signed up a little bit earlier and already got accepted, so take notice.
