According to the ever knowledgeable Major Nelson, Halo: Reach was only the third highest played on Xbox Live last week, despite the huge opening sales week. Beating the game were Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 in first and second place, respectively.
The week of reporting started September 13th, the day before Reach was released, so there was ample time for the game to be played on Xbox 360 while connected to Xbox Live. I am a bit surprised that Halo 3 still reigns in higher. I fully expected a large majority of Halo fans to hop over to the new game on day one. Maybe it’s the state of the economy or maybe people just like their familiar maps and weapons.
Next week should be interesting with the Live Activity charts. Will Reach take the top spot, or will Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 still out-rank Bungie’s latest? Only time will tell.
[UPDATE – Turns out the good Major isn’t the best with Excel, as an error in reporting resulting in Halo: Reach coming in third place. In fact, it actually came in second place, just behind Modern Warfare 2. Also, the game was the number one played game on Live since it’s release, so you can expect it to take the number one spot next week, just like Ludacris.]

If you haven’t heard about or played the game, where have you been? It happens to be a pretty decent online first-person shooter with graphics that might surprise you for a downloadable title. The game runs on the same Frostbite engine (both featured in Bad Company and Bad Company 2) and makes for a great experience with your friends. Each match is broken down into multiple classes (short range machine gunner, mid-range rifleman, and long range sniper) giving you an array of choices on how you play. Add in an assortment of vehicles like tanks, planes and bombing raids, and you’ve got a chaotic online experience. Like MAG or other big titles, everything that happens in the match is a product of an actual person doing it. That plane that just ran into your Jeep head on? Yep, that was a douchebag, but that was a person. Pick it up now on Xbox Live at the discounted price until February 22nd when this deal goes cold. Consider it a late Valentine’s Day gift to yourself.

Almost every time we bring up Aaron Greenberg’s name, it’s a story about him spitting verbal diarrhia about how much the PS3 and Wii suck his ass. This time, he praised an exclusive game from an competing console. Wait, what? On Major Nelson’s latest podcast, Greenberg praised MLB 09: The Show.
I’ll give a shout out to MLB 09: The Show (sic). I love that…best baseball game I’ve ever played.
I had to do a double take at that one. Either Aaron Greenberg is getting laid a bit more or he realizes the competition actually has some good games. Whichever the case, we should all be happy that the corporate shit show has taken a break for now.

There are couple happenings on XBL this week that you all may be interested in. First, there will be an XBL outage next week on Tuesday June 16 for the entire day. They are doing some back-end maitenance to get the servers ready for some new features we get later in the year. Also, the anticipated Overlord II demo is out as well.
No real changes in this week’s top 10. Halo 3 is still the champ. UFC makes a move in at number 8, while it’s free demo holds at number 6. It looks as if the music games have really fallen off as none of them are in the top 10 again.

Another week at the top for Halo 3. Ever since Mythic Map Pack dropped, Halo 3 has held the number one spot. Some notable members on the list include UFC demo moving up as well as Bionic Commando demo making an appearance. This is the first time in awhile that no music game is in the top 10. Perhaps the fad has finally passed.

XBL has been pretty clear that they don’t like cheating. For some reason, people are still so hard for achievements that they risk being reset to zero for a few gamerscore points for the hard to get milestones. Major Nelson dropped some knowledge on us recently about the upcoming beat down:
Deliberate cheats like these are in direct violation of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and will not be tolerated. As I post this, we’ve begun taking steps to reset the Gamerscores of the offending players.
I could see if you had to cheat on your Spanish quiz because you didn’t study or cheat at strip poker to get some girls topless, but cheating at gamerscore? Making us all look bad there d-bag.
The more things change, the more things stay the same. Halo 3 remains the top dog on the Live charts for third consecutive week. Love it or Hate it, people still play the shit out of Halo 3. Big ups to the awesome UFC demo for making an appearance. If the full version is as good as I think it will be, expect UFC to make a lot of noise.
