In case you have been living under a rock, Nintendo sells product like it’s going out of style. The DS and Wii are consistently at the top of hardware sales charts with 2010 providing record years for both platforms. In a press release this morning, the console manufacturer announced that the DS has exceeded 47 million units in sales, making it the best selling video game platform in US history.
The Wii didn’t have too shabby a year either, pushing past 7 million units of sales for the third consecutive year, another feat never accomplished in the history of gaming hardware in the United States. The Wii has now sold more than 34 million units in the US.
No one can deny the selling power of Nintendo’s platforms. People scoop up new DS editions left and right and the Wii has become a world-wide phenomenon that has pushed gaming into more households than ever before. The real question is what Nintendo will do next. The 3DS is coming this Spring, but what about the home console front? The SD graphics of the Wii were showing their age when the system shipped, but now that titles on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are pushing the limits and HDTV adoption is at its highest point, Nintendo needs to bring their graphical prowess to the high definition age.
Will they release a new home console this year? I’m not sure if we’ll really see something in 2011, but I wouldn’t doubt a 2012 release for a new Nintendo platform. As long as we all don’t die in 2012…
