So my 120GB hard drive came in yesterday for my PS3. I didn’t have a chance to install it until this morning. The whole process took me 5 minutes and was extremely easy. You use a small flat head screwdriver to remove the HDD cover, then use a small philips head screwdriver to remove one blue screw and slide the hard drive out. Once out, you remove the 4 screws on the side holding the hard drive in the cage, slide it out, and reassemble. Once you hook the PS3 back up and turn it on, you get a message stating the hard drive must be formated. Selecting Yes (twice for security purposes, so you don’t erase data you really need) will get the hard drive setup to use in your PS3. Formatted took about 20 seconds for my 120GB drive. After that was done, I was prompted to his X to restart the PS3. After that, I was off and running. All of your settings, network login, user accounts are saved in the internal PS3 memory. The only thing I lost was gamesaves (which I backed up to a Compact Flash card before I did any of this) and any content downloaded either from the PlayStation Store or copies from disks.
I’m now downloading a bunch of demos from the PlayStation Store. I should have more than enough room now for a long time on this thing. I knew 20GB wasn’t going to last me too long.

I’m pretty impressed that the ps3 can be upgraded to a larger drive without much hacking required to remove any bootable code off it or anything and it still works.
that’s great for the geeks that wanna do full blown linux on it when the new Yellow Dog Linux stuff comes out for the otheros stuff.
I’ll sit and wait and see what happens as usual - no running blind for me.
