E3 2011: Mirror’s Edge 2 With Frostbite 2.0 “Could Happen”

One of the problems EA’s Mirror’s Edge faced when it was released being put out at exactly the wrong time, going head to head with another new EA IP called Dead Space. But recently on GTTV with Geoff Keighley, EA Games boss Frank Gibeau stated that Mirror’s Edge 2 “hasn’t been killed.”

He even went so far as to say, “We’re actively looking at how to bring it back in the right way.”

“We love that franchise. The DICE guys really created something, I think, special the first time around. You’ve got to have a big idea to be able to do the next one and that’s what we’re working on,” he said.

Sounds promising doesn’t it? What do you think? DICE and Frostbite 2.0 into a parkour/destruction/run and gun shooter?

When Mr. Gibeau was asked about Frostbite 2.0 and Mirror Edge, he added that “you’ll see that combination, I’m sure.”

Also developed by DICE, Mirror’s Edge was just too out there in 2008. It definitely had it’s flaws, but went on to sell 2 million copies by October 2010. Gibeau said sales of DICE’s original IP were “not as good as expected.” In other interviews, he has said that the quality of Mirror’s Edge just “fell short”.
Dead Space has gotten it’s sequel from Visceral Games this year, and the development status of a Mirror’s Edge sequel has been in debate since early 2009. With DICE currently three-fingers deep in the development of Battlefield 3 - which of course uses the proprietary Frostbite engine 2.0 - this new engine will let the studio continue on a more annual rotation like other studios, continuing to bring up new and exciting projects on a regular basis.
Kind of promising word coming out of E3 2011 this year if you’re fans of Mirror’s Edge. I would think DICE, Frostbite 2.0, and EA can come to an agreement and make a Mirror’s Edge 2 happen. I think it needs to. Maybe fans are ready to step back into Faith’s shoes.
