Killzone 3 Might Actually Get Me to Use PlayStation Home

Sony announced yesterday that Killzone 3 would feature PlayStation Home Total Integration, which got me thinking about how much I use PlayStation Home at this point. The answer to that quandary is zero, zinch, nada. I don’t even have PlayStation Home installed on my PS3 (I deleted it to save precious hard drive space). But what Sony has announced makes me think I might actually want to use the service, at least for a bit.

The Helghast are going to invade and destroy the PlayStation Home Central Plaza, leaving it as the last remaining ISA stronghold. You’ll be able to “aid in the ISA evacuation of Helghan by launching into a series of games across three different levels to gain accessories for [your] PlayStation Home avatar.” That doesn’t really excite me — I couldn’t give two shits what my Home avatar looks like. But the next part of the announcement is what has me intrigued. “Completion of all three levels will reward players with Unlock Points, which can be redeemed for new weapons and abilities in Killzone 3 multiplayer.” Now that’s something I can get behind.

For a little bit of your time to complete the PlayStation Home Killzone 3 mini-game levels, you’ll be able to unlock new items in the game. This is a fairly ingenious move by Sony. Hardcore gamers (ie. the ones buying Killzone 3) tend to stay away from PlayStation Home. By giving them something that’s actually meaningful, there’s reason to give Home a chance. Some may like it and stay, others will just be there for the free stuff, but either way, more people are going to explore Home. That’s really the goal on Sony’s part.

If you haven’t already, you’ll be able to pre-order Killzone 3 inside PlayStation Home through Amazon and receive an exclusive Helghan jet pack costume for your PlayStation Home avatar. The game bundle you can pre-order here includes the Unlock and Load Pack, giving you a PSN code with Unlock Points to use towards a weapon or ability of choice, as well as the Killzone 3 Retro Map Pack. Basically, the same deal you could get if you went directly to Amazon’s website, aside from the Helghast jet pack costume for your Home avatar.

I might as well fire up the PS3 and download PlayStation Home now to prepare for the Helghast invasion on January 27th. I needs me some free weapon upgrades so I can shoot you bitches faster. Who’s with me?
