I Expected More From Sony

After watching Sony’s E3 press conference last night (check out our live blog here), I was left scratching my head. The whole thing seemed off to me. There didn’t seem to be much energy in the room, Jack Tretton had his typical dry delivery and no one really came to the stage to pump up the crowd. Sure, Uncharted 3 killed and Sly 4 was a nice surprise. The Vita has good pricing and looks like a solid piece of hardware. But Sony didn’t show anything that we haven’t seen before to truly wow me.

First off, I think they should have brought out Kevin Butler to get the crowd going. Maybe the whole PlayStation Network hack had some things cut from the show, but still, KB could have done some magic up there. Second, I fully expected some announcements for any new PS3 features. Maybe cross game chat or some better social features. Anything, really. Nothing was said. Not a peep. Hell, the Vita has better features in this department than the PS3. Microsoft is constantly updating and revamping the Xbox 360′s dashboard to evolve with the changing landscape of the console. Sony is resting on their laurels and doing nothing. It’s a bit sad. I was expecting more. Again, maybe the PSN downtime shelved some plans, but at least mention it for down the road.

I had high hopes for Sony going in to the press conference. Everyone knew they had a lot to prove given the outages and personal data theft, but they had some solid games. What we knew about performed well, but there wasn’t much we didn’t know about that showed up. Where were the new games? Where was The Last Guardian? Do we really need yet another way to rent movies on our PS3′s?

If I had to rank the press conferences yesterday in order of success (in my eyes), it would be Microsoft -> EA -> Ubisoft -> Sony. Yes, I put Mr Caffeine above Sony. Even though I wanted to punch him in the face, at least there was some emotion in their press conference. Very sad and disappointed at Sony’s offering.
