I was on the phone with my wife a few minutes ago and mentioned the fact that Kinect and Move would be coming soon and I need to find more storage space for my peripherals. Granted, I already have plenty of video game add-ons, from regular controllers to Rock Band instruments to DJ Hero turntables to all kinds of Wii paraphernalia. It’s quite a lot. So the thought of even more things, some of which will have to permanently sit on the TV stand, did not excite my beautiful bride.
This brings up a good question, as many people are expecting Move and Kinect to engage a larger gaming audience. Do these people really want more stuff in their living rooms? My wife sure as hell doesn’t (but that’s not going to stop me anyway). I have a feeling quite a few wives, mothers, sisters, or parents out there may feel the same way.
So, here’s what I want all of you to do. Give your significant other a call, or ask your mommy if you live at home. Does adding even more gaming devices to the house annoy the crap out of them, even if they’ll bring in more casual and engaging gaming experiences? I already know the answer in my house.
Bungie released a new Halo: Reach ViDoc today. As always, everything they do has hidden meanings, red herrings, and a hint of subtlety. I had an inkling that John 117 would somehow show up in Halo: Reach. This latest video assures it. Here is why.

As many of you know, Dr. Pepper has provided new ‘DLC’ for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 by means of a promotion. Essentially, you buy a Dr. Pepper product and are able to redeem it for the final weapon of any class (M16, UMP45, MG 3, M95). In addition to the weapon, you get new camo for both your weapon and character. While all of this sounds great, it ruins the dynamic of the game (especially for Snipers).

Yesterday, Harmonix announced Rock Band 3 coming this Holiday season. My reaction: eh. While I have been a huge rhythm game fan, I feel the genre is growing a little long in the tooth. There is very little left to innovate without more, crazier hardware, which I’m not buying. I have more than enough plastic instruments. So this begs the question – do we really need another Rock Band?
Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand this from a business perspective. Harmonix needs to make money and making a game is how that happens. I get it. I fully respect everyone at Harmonix and I know they’re not trying to fleece me out of money. But as a gamer with a peripherals all over the house, I want to know what this new game is going to offer than I can’t get with DLC and expansion packs. They’ve said the game will “innovate and revolutionize the music genre once again”, but I have my doubts.
I’ll be waiting to see what the Boston-based development team is going to bring to the table to mix things up a bit. A new version of Rock Band 2 or The Beatles Rock Band or even Green Day Rock Band isn’t something I’m going to pre-order or even run out and buy on launch time. I need to be wowed.
