Resistance to me feels like the kid brother of Killzone. Both are PS3 exclusives and many a fanboy hang their collective hats on the fact that these two shooters are theirs and theirs alone. Despite much ruckus, Resistance has never really been the juggernaut it was meant to be. Resistance: Fall of Man was a launch title, so it gets a pass as the PS3 was very expensive and had a limited library when it first hit the shelves. Resistance 2 was reviewed very positively by a lot of people, but I did not resonate and sales were underwhelming. The word on the street is that Resistance 3 might be the best yet.
The developers are taking a slightly different route with the multiplayer this year. Gone are the days of the 40-60 player clusterfuck that was Resistance 2. More people does not automatically mean better. Too many times your life span was extremely short on a frenzied, over-crowded map. It looks like the goal here is to make a more concise 16 player experience that emphasizes custom characters and deep leveling up. Players will need more than a few new guns and skins to sink many hours into a shooter.
I think Resistance 3 can be very good. It is an exclusive that is far enough away from Killzone 3‘s release and a different type of game altogether. They are shooters, but not the same kind of shooter. Resistance does face a huge uphill battle as Battlefield 3 looks mind blowing and the yearly Call of Duty game is sure to sway a few million people in its direction. Will you help put an end to this trilogy or just resist playing it all together?
