Is Dr. Pepper Ruining Battlefield: Bad Company 2?

As many of you know, Dr. Pepper has provided new ‘DLC’ for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 by means of a promotion. Essentially, you buy a Dr. Pepper product and are able to redeem it for the final weapon of any class (M16, UMP45, MG 3, M95). In addition to the weapon, you get new camo for both your weapon and character. While all of this sounds great, it ruins the dynamic of the game (especially for Snipers).

When Bad Company 2 came out, it was extremely rare to see someone with a M95. Even before the Dr. Pepper promotion, it was still rare. With the addition of the Dr. Pepper promotion, you see tons of players with the M95 SA (I’m also guilty of having it).

The point of playing each class in Battlefield is that you had to play with it until you unlocked the final weapon. In the case of the Sniper, the final weapon is the M95 which is incredibly powerful. As for myself, I find it pretty hard to level up quickly with the Sniper. Now that Dr. Pepper has rolled around with their new promo, anyone can get the M95 in a few simple steps.

Although Dr. Pepper has every right to advertise in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, it has taken away form the core mechanics of the game. Being given the top weapon in a class just because you bought didn’t buy a Dr. Pepper is a bit annoying, especially considering that these weapons take a fair amount of play time to unlock.

What do you guys think about the promotion?

it doesnt matter a whole lot to me, i’ve already gotten all the unlocks, and i play PSN.

but it does throw a monkey wrench into the progression. while the other top weapons dont completely replace the previous one in terms of usability, the M95 does. the only thing that makes the stupid thing bearable is that not everyone has it. a really good sniper can go on a rampage with the M95, but 5 ok snipers will have the same effect.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Not only does it give you an unfair advantage with the top weapons but you get screwed out of additional achievement points. Dr. Pepper/EA are screwing over anyone who doesn’t live in U.S.

    I disagree.

    1) The top gun for any class is not necessarily the BEST gun for that class. Most people who have spent considerable time as a Medic will tell you that the M60 is better than the MG3. While the M95 does great damage, there are plenty of snipers who prefer the GDL for its pinpoint accuracy. The AK-74 su is a great gun for engineers. It’s the one I see people use most often. There are tons of good Assault guns. Even if they were the best guns, it wouldn’t make THAT much of a difference considering it’s relatively easy to unlock some very good guns for each class very early on.

    2) Based on the following statement, I’m not sure how much you’ve actually played:

“When Bad Company 2 came out, it was extremely rare to see someone with a M95. Even before the Dr. Pepper promotion, it was still rare. With the addition of the Dr. Pepper promotion, you see tons of players with the M95 SA (I’m also guilty of having it).”

I was seeing the M95 pretty regularly after the first week. Chances are, if you don’t see someone using them now, it’s because they a) focused on unlocking other classes first, b) just bought the game, or c) prefer the GDL for reason mentioned above.

In the end, I just don’t care if someone gets a particular gun just because they bought a Dr Pepper. Any benefit someone would get is negligible considering how long the game has been out and how many people have all or most guns unlocked anyways.

Are you upset because of the balance issues, or do you just think it isn’t fair because other people had to earn the guns, which most of the time they probably won’t use unless they want to earn stars? If it’s the latter, I can’t help but think it’s a little hypocritical to be upset about that when you write for a site called “Loot Ninja.”

    1. I’m more upset that companies are able to “buy out” a game. You also have to realize that while I would like to put everything in an article, not everyone wants to read it.

Right now I’m level 17 in Battlefield. While I should be leveling up my other classes, the M60 with the red dot and LMG+ is one of the best weapons in my opinion. You also get the ability to heal which gives you +80 for squad members

Also, if you notice at the beginning of the article, I mentioned that it applied mostly to snipers. With the engineer, I use the AK-74 with magnum ammunition and I don’t play assault much (prefer support classes).

While this isn’t a huge deal, its a trend that I would rather not see continue. Just imagine if in the next COD you can get the level 70 weapon unlock just by buying a soft drink (once again I don’t like the AK, just using an example).

if i have to put up with the dr pepper b/s for a top shelf game like this i will

  5. Mastema: I’m just mad because you don’t even know weapon names. The sniper rifle you mentioned is the Gottfried Prechtl GOL, not “GDL.” Also, the Kalashnikov AK-74u is not an “AK-74 au.”

But nonetheless, I agree that the Dr. Pepper promotions are ruining the on-line gameplay of Bad Company 2. People who are just starting out in the game don’t have the “privelages” to be using such weapons.

I got all the weapons legitimately before trying to get the promotional weapons. This also includes the Springfield Armory M1 Garand.

The M24 SWS is still my favorite scout rifle.

I unlocked the M95 the normal way (they don’t even sell Dr. Pepper here), and I’m really disappointed with it. Apparently it was nerfed in a recent patch, which might explain things. It’s slow, but no longer does more damage. You’re better off with the other bolt-action rifles.

  7. Mr. A

I think the more accomplished snipers of the game will pwn those using the M95 with a GOL anyway.

Aside from which, those that choose to DLC weapons rather than unlock them… that’s fine. It has no bearing on skill level anyway. Some are better with the M16, some with the M416. 1911 vs M93. When the cards are down, scoreboard.

Now, should the DLC have been more exciting, say as maps or such? Maybe. Optional fatigues, probably. It’s a little frustrating when one side blends in the snow versus the other…

Either way, grab all the weapons you want, you’re still gonna get shanked.

any of the DLC makes a player better. anyone can have every single unlock in about 10 hour of play. even bc 2 limited edition is a waste of cash.

    1. Spaceraser

i’m not sure about your country of origin, but here in the states the limited edition costs the same, sooooo i’m not certain its a waste of cash. at worst its simply irrelevant.

  9. Kharn121

They touted it as just a camo job not actual weapons. Yeah its BS that Dr.Pepper/EA decided the only way we in the US could get the new camo was buy 20 bottles o soda to get 4 codes insead of spending $6 on marketplace like the rest of the world can.
