2010 Game of the Year – Honorable Mentions

Matt Banks December 23, 2010 | 3 Comments

By now, you’ve all seen our 2010 Game of the Year awards. All five nominees are terrific titles and we would have been comfortable awarding any of them with the coveted honor. Only one could win and Red Dead Redemption took the crown. But those five games aside, we had discussed some great titles that just didn’t make the cut for one reason or another. We felt those games deserved some sort of mention, so hit the jump to check out a few other games we wanted to highlight for being damn good in 2010.

Review: Alan Wake “The Writer” DLC

Justin McCullough October 20, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The great thing about the second DLC for Alan Wake – called “The Writer” – is it’s the final download for Alan Wake and we get to see the story tied up into a nice neat little bow. The bad thing about the Writer DLC is it could be the final time we actually see Alan Wake.

While the disc-based game was great, the follow-up to that (The Signal DLC) wasn’t as strong and resorted to campy horde mode-esque tactics and meaningless driving. Hit the jump to see how the second and possible end to Alan Wake fares.

Alan Wake’s “The Writer” DLC Coming October 12th

Justin McCullough September 29, 2010 | 1 Comment

The final DLC installment for Alan Wake (before Alan Wake 2 – if there is one – is released) is set to hit your dashboard of choice on October 12th, 2010 for the low price of 560 MS points ($7 bucks).

Remedy has already stated that “The Writer” DLC will be the last downloadable episode for Alan Wake, with a few trailers hinting at “End The Nightmare”. Well, that would mean (if we’re going by TV standards) that this DLC would be the first season’s finale. I can think of a few great TV shows out there that had horrible finales (Seinfield comes to mind), but there’s also some legendary ones (The Bob Newhart Show).

But, seeing as Microsoft hasn’t signed on for a sequel to Alan Wake (even though it’s already written and thought out), this could be the end (the series finale) for Mr. Wake. This could be our last glimpse at those memorable Northwestern themed characters we’ve all come to know and love. I guess we’ll find out in the coming months whether the series is renewed for another “season”.

If they are basing Alan Wake’s success by these DLC’s, then count me in. I want more Wake. The disc-based game was great, “The Signal” DLC was a step down, but we’ll see if Remedy steps it up and brings the noise in this next “Writer” installment.

Top 5 List: Worst Video Game Jobs

Justin McCullough August 27, 2010 | 2 Comments

We’ve all had shitty jobs in our employment history. Maybe not as bad as an elephant shit catcher, but we all worked at the really low paying pizza delivery gig, or we had to rewind video tapes at the movie rental store. Hell, I’m betting some of you out there are reading this in that shitty job right now. As in at this very second. You know what I’m talking about.

Video games on the other hand are the release we so desperately need from those shit-tastic jobs. Sadly, a few of those crappy jobs have been put into those video games. You might not have seen them, but their there, secretly behind the scenes (or I just made them up because it would be fun). Read on for the full list.

Review: Alan Wake “The Signal” DLC

Justin McCullough August 9, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Alan Wake ended on a somewhat fulfilling cliffhanger (if there is such a thing?). The ending to the disc based game was sort of expounded upon in the end, but it left most gamers trying to fill in the blanks and figure out the rest of the story. It wants gamers to think about the ending of the main story arc and expand upon the things that are shown. Does the new Alan Wake DLC “The Signal” go further and do that? Read on for more.

If you slept on Alan Wake, you’re missing out on an amazing game. Remedy and Microsoft slapped together a thrilling TV-show-like experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And now, you don’t even have to pay new game prices. Starting today, Alan Wake will cost $39.99 or less at retailers nationwide.

Amazon has the game for $38.90 and GameStop has it for $39.99. And with it including The Signal DLC for free, you should all jump on this. Justin’s review of The Signal will be going up soon, so check back to hear how awesome it is.

Alan Wake DLC “The Signal” Available Today

Justin McCullough July 27, 2010 | Leave a Comment

If you were confused by the ending to Alan Wake or left wanting more, today is the day fans have been waiting for. The continuing saga of the acclaimed writer Alan Wake called “The Signal” is available today on Xbox Live. It’s free for those of you who bought a new copy of the game (via an unlock code that came with the game) and is 560 Microsoft points for those of you who bought the game used (How could you!?).

Alan Wake is back and is in greater peril than ever before after the end of the game. With the boundaries between reality and nightmare becoming even more distorted, it’s up to the player to keep the flashlight nearby and head for “The Signal”.

A new trailer has also been released for “The Signal” available over on the Alan Wake site. Be sure to head on over there and add that shit to your download queue (if you have the unlock code in your pocket). And if do already have the code and were walking around for about a month or two with that unlock code in your pocket? Well, you get some props from me because that makes you a pretty damn hardcore fan.

Review: Alan Wake

Matt Banks May 28, 2010 | 2 Comments

Alan Wake has been in the making for years – five years to be exact. Long enough that I preordered the game for the Xbox 360 console launch and completely forgot (and subsequently got a call last week from GameStop telling me my preorder would be in). That extra development cycle at Remedy was completely worth it – Alan Wake is a phenomenal gaming experience in which every Xbox 360 owner should partake. With chilling horror moments, a compelling story, and solid gameplay mechanics, Alan Wake is a must buy.
