One of the things we all hate as gamers are quitters. Those pesky gamers who get down on their kill/death ratio and just up and leave the multiplayer match. We’ve all seen them. We know who they are. We hate them.
In a recent interview with Xbox360Achievements.org, Community Director for Bungie Brian Jarrard hinted at a few things that the Halo: Reach developers are looking into to stop would-be quitters from doing it.
“I think one of the new things people will be excited about too, is how we’re going to be able to penalize people who are habitually quitting out of games, which isn’t exactly cheating, but it creates a really negative experience for everybody else in the game,” explained Jarrard.
“We actually have new tools now to detect that and eventually, people who do this habitually will actually be penalized,” he continued, “We want to be able to remove them from the population so they can’t make everyone else keep having a bad time.”
I don’t want to put words in Mr. Jarrard’s mouth, but when he says “We want to be able to remove them from the population”, it sounds like the matchmaking servers are going to segregate the “good players” from the habitual quitters. It brings up a weird situation. Who are they to tell us that we are playing the game wrong? Who determines and who tells you how you play a game “correctly”? Does Bungie? What about the matchmaking servers who collect all of this data? Does Bungie have the right to do this?
Obviously it’s just my assumption and by no means fact. I’m sure you’ll have to quit out of numerous games in order to be flagged as a habitual quitter. But what if this statement turns out to be true and I’m just lumped into with the worst of the worst?
I definitely don’t want to be penalized for quitting a game to eat supper a few times or do tasks around the house. Do you? Let me know in the comments.

The quitter ban they are implementing will normally be a timeout, which doesn't affect people who leave for say, supper or for some other reason besides being a baby or having a lousy network setup.
When they talk about removing people from the population (i.e. a matchmaking ban) they're talking about real abusers. This is a good thing.
Meh, I dont know. If youre getting the Shite beat out of you, why shouldnt you be able to quit. No one likes being on a team thats losing 14-48. Just because you end up playing 4 friends that are all general worthy and you get thrown on a team with no one wearing head phones doesn't mean you should get penalized for quitting. No matter how "incredible" bungie thinks its matchmaking system is, these lopsided matches still happen. I think there needs to be a better system implemented, but how that will happend i dont know. Maybe an enter/exit system like MW2, but somehow combined with halo's matchmaking.
Of course they have the right. You're using their servers to play a game.
Bungie is smart about multiplayer; they've been doing it for a while now. They've been tweaking their ban-hammer for years, and know how to detect certain things. If you leave for dinner, or the doorbell rings, or you're badly losing a match and you're down three teammates, that's not habitual quitting. Habitual quitting is exiting mid-game when it's not the map you want, or you see that your opponenets are too highly/lowly ranked. I don't like getting into a game, only to see three of the eight people leave all of a sudden!
As usual, you only have to worry unless you're one of "those" people.
