Hulu Plus Only Needs PlayStation Plus For Preview

Remember how we told you Hulu Plus would require PlayStation Plus on the PS3? Well, that was only partially correct. We’re not too proud to admit we were wrong. Turns out that Hulu Plus will be available for all PS3 owners after the preview period, which should last a month or so. During that time, you’ll need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to get early access.

So, PS3 owners out there can still get free access to streaming video services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus (not counting their own monthly fees). I’m glad Sony didn’t push to require PlayStation Plus completely for Hulu Plus — having free access to all of these services is one of their major strengths compared to Xbox Live. I’m sure it’ll eventually change, but for now, you won’t have to pay even more to get Hulu on your PS3.

Does this news change your opinion on purchasing Hulu Plus? It doesn’t do anything for me — I’m not getting it either way.

Hulu Plus Requires PlayStation Plus on PS3

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the fanboy waters…

Hulu Plus was announced yesterday — the premium online TV streaming service running $9.99 a month. It’ll be coming to the PS3 “soon” and the Xbox 360 in early 2011. And while many were hoping that all PS3 owners would have access to the streaming content should they subscribe to Hulu, it turns out that just isn’t the case. Kotaku got a hold of a screengrab that clearly states PlayStation Plus membership will be required for Hulu streaming. Well, shucks.

So either way you look at it, you’re going to have to pony up $50 a year for one console or the other to get access to Hulu Plus. Since most of us already pay for Xbox Live for the multiplayer gaming, guess which one we’ll use? Sorry, Sony, but I personally don’t see the value in PlayStation Plus at this point. Maybe when more/better games are added and when new services take advantage of the subscription. But for now, I’ll check out Hulu on Xbox 360 when and if I subscribe.

PlayStation Plus Launches Today with a Ton of Content

PS3 owners can now grab a firmware update bringing their systems up to v3.40 to support today’s launch of PlayStation Plus, the new for-pay service on the PSN that brings you all kinds of gaming goodies in addition to the already free multiplayer. But just exactly what will you get in the first month? Here’s the skinny on all the free and discounted content coming your way today:

Added up, that’s roughly $88 worth of free or discounted value. Considering you only pay $50 a year, it’s not too shabby. However, how many of you out there really give two shits about half the games listed above? Are any of you even still playing Warhawk?

So, now that you know exactly what you’re getting in month one of PlayStation Plus (along with a golden d-pad icon on your PSN account for everyone to see), will you be making the jump? I’m personally on the fence. One one hand, I already get free multiplayer gaming on the PS3. On the other hand, someone at Loot Ninja should subscribe so we can bring you full coverage of the new service. Decisions, decisions…
