We’ve heard the rumors, seen the fake pictures, and the internets are rumbling. The PSP2 is coming. If Sony is smart and wants to turn themselves around, this is one the best ways to do it… if they do it right. Don’t worry, Uncle Keith is here to tell them what needs to happen. If I’m going to buy a PSP2, this is what it will need to be.
1. To be a phone – One device to rule them all. Plenty of people are tired of lugging around a phone, iPod, and gaming system. Without the phone it’s just PSP Go, and we all know how well THAT went. It needs to be great phone, not just a good phone.
2. Solid specs – It needs to run games & apps, and it needs to run them smooth. Over 1ghz processor and 1gb of RAM. Plenty of room for storage as well, so 32GB at the low end. Front-facing camera, GPS, 3G/4G, large & lively touchscreen (3.7inch at least), Android OS, Speaker-phone, the works.
3. Dual Analogue Nubs – Hehe, nubs. Yeah I want 2 of those. They are required for hardcore 3D games like a decent FPS or 3rd Person shooters and the PSP felt neutered without the second nub. Touchpads will not have the necessary sensitivity or the same tactile feel as a nub. If you want a touch pad, put 2 on back as L2/R2 buttons, something that crimps current PSP play of PS1 titles. Love playing with nubs… I mean, on we go with the list.
4. Sync with the PS3 and Windows/Mac – PlayStation Store sync across all devices? Sexy. Nothing syncing… blows. It has to work across the board, over the air and wired. Jump into the cloud.
5. Plays Minis, PS1, Android Games, and PSP titles – I’ve recently discovered Minis, I already have a collection of Android and PSP games… why not have them all in the same place? If this will operate like a decent phone we can’t have a new OS in the market place, there are already too many. I don’t care if it runs Android and the XMB at the same time, has an XMB skin, or runs PSP titles from a built in app. Just make it work quickly & smoothly.
6. Fit in your front pocket – Size matters and in this case bigger is not better. It has to be a phone, not a monstrosity. I use my phone every day and it needs to fit into a front pocket without looking like I’m smuggling a midget. Anything larger than the iPhone 4, HTC Desire, or Galaxy S is probably too large.
7. High Build Quality – The bar has been raised since the PSP was initially released. Gone is cheap plastic, good smart phones are made with awesome things like aluminum, titanium, and other “ums”. If a 5 year old can have it for 5 minutes unsupervised, only the child should be broken, not the PSP.
8. 2011 – To be released soon. Next year. And not a year from now next year, but Q3 next year at the latest. A concept is useless if it isn’t executed on.
What do you think? What does the PSP2 need to survive?

I don’t know if that’s a concept pic of the psp2 or something someone threw together, but I like it. I agree with pretty much everything you said except the phone part. I like my blackberry and I don’t plan on giving it up and I’m sure most wouldn’t want to give up their iPhone or pay two phone bills. I’d like to see something with better resolution, faster processor speed, the latest wi-fi compatibility, increased storage, movies, apps, and games. If they do it right, it could be on par with the iPod touch.
Is there a “significant need” in the market for phone cum gaming device? At the price point, people would prefer business phone only. May be a few years down the line, very cheap phones cum gaming devices would be made available to pre-teens and teens.
Ideally not just games but all digital things should get bundled into a single convenient secure sturdy and affordable device.
Great list. Posted it at PSP2Rumors
This is a really stupid post. There are pictures of the dev kit. It is confirmed it has 2 analogue nubs AND is HD. It’s also been confirmed it is NOT the playstation phone(that is a different product entirely).
1. NOTHING has been “confirmed”. Leaked images of prototypes are as much confirmation as me taking a shit on a plate and putting a Sony sticker on it.
2. No one has said the PlayStation Phone is different than the PSP2. It very well could be the same thing. Everything is rumor and conjecture at this point.
3. This post is not stupid. It’s a well thought out list of things that a great deal of gamers are looking for in the next iteration of the PSP.
i agree with all but the phone part, imo it should be like the iphone/pod and have the phone part as an option.
This is for Rider646, have you ever compared PSP with ipod touch for gaming? there is no contest, perhaps you like having to obscure the screen with your thumbs but everyone i know do not.
as an MP3/4 player, ipod is better but as a gaming platform PSP wipes the floor with apple.
The biggest issue for sony as i see it is to sort out PSN.
ps, has the person who wrote this list any knowledge at all? 1ghz cpu? pentium (1) had more speed than this but are s**t slow nowadays!
AMD had much slower clock speeds than pentium4s but had pretty much the same power!
sorry thats pentium 3 not 1
lets see…. PSN, Game Sharing, Video, Music, Pictures, Comics, RSS, Skype, Remote Play, Hot-spot Finder, WiFi, Internet Browser, Internet Radio, Movies, and Games. (PSP, PS1, Flash, Minis) All on original PSP.
So now we need. Dual Analog, 4G, Camera, Touch, Tilt, Vibration, Flashlight, Kickstand, Apps, GPS, and Stronger Flash and Java Support. Also would like to be able to manage files and folders better.
Battery life!!! Battery life!!! Battery life!!!
Like your list, open minded on the phone part.
Would prefer more AAA games rather than new hardware. Happy with my PSP GO & homebrew.
Don’t care if they drm the new AAA games but don’t touch my homebrew!!!
It needs glasses-free 3D. Flame me for all you want, but that’s why I’m getting a 3DS.
