Could PS3 Hacking Cause More Frequent Firmware Updates?

Look, we all hate Sony’s firmware updates. They take forever to download and install and they happen way too often. I have friends (<cough> Scuba </cough>) who haven’t been online on the PSN for over 4 months because they don’t feel like updating the firmware every time they turn on their PS3. While the update frequency has slowed a bit, I have a feeling it’s about to pick up, full speed ahead. Those damn pesky hackers are to blame.

Take a look at the PSP as a model for what’s about to happen. Sony and the hacking community are in a cat-and-mouse game of one upping each other. Sony releases a new, more secure firmware update, and then the hackers work around the clock to bypass all security measures to load homebrew and pirated games. The recent PS3 Jailbreak has set that path in motion on Sony’s home console. Firmware 3.42, a mandatory update, closed the security vulnerability that allowed the Jailbreak to run in the first place. But do you think that’s going to stop the hacking community?

The only hope we have is that Sony’s security measures are strong enough on the PS3 that hacks don’t happen every other week. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be cursing at your console and just giving up. I wanted to play some Super Street Fighter IV last night in the 20-30 minutes of free time I had. But between the firmware update and a game patch (which I can’t blame on Sony entirely, I can only complain about their ridiculous patching procedures), I would have ended up with 5 minutes of play time, which just wasn’t worth it. This has become and all too familiar scene for myself and many I’ve spoken to and heard from with the PS3. Ars Technica’s Ben Kuchera wrote a scathing editorial of the process about a month ago. It’s getting out of control.

The coming days and weeks will be interesting as the hacking community rallies to try and circumvent Sony’s v3.42 patch. Will they be able to do it? My guess is yes, since these are some pretty damn smart individuals who have nothing better to do with their time. But this tidal wave of firmware updates could cause quite a few people to stop using their PS3′s if it comes to fruition. Here’s to hoping the hackers can’t find a new Jailbreak.

IDK what u r using to download but MY updates do not take long at all … The update last night took me all of 2min to download and install … I don't know about everyone else but I personally welcome the firmware updates! Everyone complains about the updates, but if they didn't, u would complain about that too! Updates is Sonys way of keeping the ps3 "future-proof" and I welcome that mentality with open arms … so stop b*tchin and enjoy the video games … OH YEA, stop b*tchin about your download times, quit being a cheap b*stard, and UPGRADE your internet speed! … PROBLEM SOLVED!

Add me on PSN people … SITHLORD-GAMBLE

If you truly think updating is a chore I view you as a complete retard. Instead of being an ungrateful worm you should be thankful Sony is fighting to good fight to keep our console off limits for the twats who try to hack it.

    1. What you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

You have friends that haven't been online on the ps3 for over 4 months because of updates? Hate to be the one to tell you this but…if that's true, your friends really don't give a damn about games, blu ray movies, or anything else the ps3 has to offer. Your friends seem spoiled. Use to getting what they want, when they want, how they want. I use the ps3 a lot and I don't get too many updates and I don't have to wait as long as you do. While it's updating…make some toast, have a bowel movement, brush your teeth, check your email, ask yourself why you have friends that are so anal and spoiled.

Pirates suck. They are effecting casual gamers by wasting what little time they do have have to game, to install endless patches. For shame.

You mean 'affecting' gamers, the result of which are the following 'effects': 'wasting what little time they do have have to game, to install endless patches'. Sorry, just a bugbear of mine.

You don't have to download the updates. Your choice damn choice.

    Hack that sob

Oh good Lord. We get what, one update every three months on average? They take what, 10-30 minutes depending on how busy Sony's server is and your internet speed? You're looking at 2 whole hours out of an ENTIRE YEAR that you can't use your PS3. Take some Ritalin, and chill the eff out. The updates bring new features, free up RAM and processing power, add security, and overall just make the PS3 function better. I don't see the issue.
