Sega announced a new Sonic game today for the Wii and DS, Sonic Colors. Set in a theme park orbiting around Sonic’s home planet, you have to save the alien Wisp creatures from Dr. Eggman. The Wisps exude special forces that Sonic can use to run faster and extend the gameplay, but this is just another Sonic game that will come and go with little fanfare.

Look, I loved Sonic growing up. I played the first three games on my Genesis countless times. Hell, I even played Sonic Spinball for more hours than I’d like to mention. But I think it’s time to either completely reboot in a way that will sell millions of units or just let Sonic fade into the video game character nursing home. The past few games haven’t garnered much attention for a reason - they just haven’t been that much fun. I don’t have much faith in Sonic Colors, either.

I’m sure we’ll get some hands-on time at E3, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on us loving the game. While Nintendo is constantly evolving Mario, it seems Sega is just plowing through with what worked 10 years ago with their flagship character.
