If you are a fan of Soul Calibur then you were probably happy to hear that Darth Vader and everyone’s favorite green muppet were coming to your game. Of course they were console specific, so if you purchased a 360 or a PS3 you received one of the characters. Well now you can purchase the other so you can have the ultimate Star Wars fanboy battle on your couch, sounds good right? It is until you hear the price:
Namco Bandai has revealed that Darth Vader and Yoda will be available as downloadbale content this Thursday for 400 MS Points. We’re still waiting on a confirmation of a Euro price for PSN, but it’ll cost our American bed-fellows $4.99.
This is absurd! Five bucks for a character? One that isn’t even supposed to be in the Soul Calibur universe!
If this is the case and the folks at Namco get away with this kind of price gauging tactics it could spell trouble for gamers moving forward. What if Capcom decided that you could only use Ryu and Ken when you started Street Fighter 4 and had to pay for the rest of characters or even better still, could pay ten dollars to play as Mighty Mouse.
DLC is great when it makes sence and the price structure isn’t aimed at abusing the gamer you are selling to. How can you justify a five-dollar price tag for some code for one character, in all actuality the characters were known before the game even launched so they had time to put them on the discs already and just have a code to unlock them. Free would have been a lot better!

it is a sign of the times. watch as the music, movie, and tv industries knees are buckled by the internet and remember all the cash-raping they were guilty of. Now watch as the gaming industry now dwarfs their collective roles with 1 million pre-orders and first week sales. It is only going to get worse as the gaming industry gets fatter and fatter because it thrives on the internet as opposed to the internet being its competition in the entertainment industries Achilles heel.
Hey Al, the characters are already on the disks. All Namco is doing is unlocking it. When the game was leaked, some pirates found the characters on both versions of the game.
Nice image, you must be a boobie man. What size are those DDD? My C’s look a tad bit small compared to those, haha.
On a serious note, yeah, $5 bucks is a bit harsh for a new character but at the end of the day, it will sell.
@ y2julio - Exactly, so I am paying $5 for an unlock code! Insane.
