bioshock.jpg2kGames is having an art design contest giving one lucky, talented gamer instant fame by allowing them to design the box cover art for Bioshock: Limited Edition. We all know that this game is going to be HUGE, granted they have had enough time to complete it, but click on the link above and read all about the in’s and out’s. What they are looking for is anyone’s guess, but take a look, this could be your big break.

sega.jpg Sega has just announced that it has signed multiyear deals with The Hulk, Capt America, and Thor. While it is still funny that a fictional character can sign a deal, nonetheless, they are now apart of Sega who is trying to revitalize the once proud company. Yahoo reports that Sega has officially added the three to its company and hopes to make movies and next gen games. There is a new Hulk movie coming out in 2008 with Ed Norton playing Bruce Banner. There is also a next gen game planned as well with the release of the movie. No word yet on a Thor or Captain America movie, just speculation and rumors, but the Hulk movie is already under contract. With so many comic book based movies and games either out and on the horizon(most of them suck), this could usher in a new era with the some old characters we have not seen done yet in the 21st century.

Super Swing GolfSuper Swing Golf on the Wii was a game that I was very much looking forward to playing. The game in concept and feel has many similarities to the classic Hot Shots games on the PSP and PS2. Super Swing Golf is a decent game but takes the cartoonish antics a bit over the top and does not really provide much more than that.

The game mechanics at time feel a bit off especially during putting. The chipping and driving are quite fun with the Wii remote. The game really shines in it’s multiplayer action (much like all the Wii games to date) where 4 people can shoot a round in different game types.

Overall the game was not horrible and had some fun aspects, but it just did not make me a believer like Hot Shots did, I would love to see a port of that on the Wii. Graphics were nice although very cartoonish, sound was decent and controls were fair, not a bad rental.

Overall rating : 6.5 out of 10

Quality Assurance ImageIt’s becoming increasingly common these days for products to not work properly. The video game industry is a huge culprit here. From consoles to accessories to games themselves, everything is broken when it ships.

Let’s start with consoles, shall we? I’ve never had consoles die on their own accord. Sure, there have been wrestling matches when I was a kid where a Genesis or NES got smashed, but you have to take those in stride. Even with the last generation, hardware problems weren’t that prevalent. Fast forward to today, and we see hundreds upon hundreds of Xbox 360’s failing every day. Personally, I’m on my 6th Xbox 360. Microsoft knows there’s something wrong. They wouldn’t be changing the warranty and upgrading their product replacement systems if there wasn’t. Maybe some testing could fix the problem up front.

lego-batman.jpgMany of us played with LEGO’s when we were little. Some of us had to play with Mega blocks because dad had to get a case of Bud pounders instead. Anyway, we have all played the Lego Star Wars games and had an absolute blast. Well now we get to enjoy and expect much of the same when Lego Batman: The Game is released for all systems, both current and next gen. No official word on the date yet, but ign.com has some intimate details of some of the storyline. It looks like shit is gonna hit the fan when all the criminals that the Caped Crusaded and his homoerotic sidekick had captured all escape and run amok on unsuspecting Gotham. They also claim that it will be the same team that worked on the Star Wars games so expect a high replay value and many unlockables. Check back often for updates.

Got game… get paid.

taz8080 | 1 Comment

Mario cashIn a recent issue of Reader’s Digest there was an article discussing the overall video game sales last year being estimated at $12.5 billion dollars. Now that is a lot of Double cheeseburgers. Not only were the sales of video games on the rise, but also the number of professional leagues and tournaments as evidenced by the rise in popularity of Major League Gaming or the MLG. Some pro gamers can earn upwards of $250,000 a year and even get paid $150 an hour to “teach” people to play games. So the next time your mom or wife yells at you for playing games just let her know that you are in training, shit even Jordan has to shoot hoops to get better. Game on!

God of War II

trev | 1 Comment

Kratos is back
Most people have already heard about the first God of War, but if you haven’t here’s a quick recap:

Normal Game – Hit something with a bunch of attacks till it dies
God of War – Beat something mercilessly until you can do a finisher on it ranging from something as mundane (relative to this game anyway) as ripping something’s wings off and stomping its head in or ripping its arm off and beating it to death with it to the more spectacular using your swords to scale an ogre like a fucking mountain and ripping its eye out.
Which would you rather play? Yea.
Gameplay
God of War 2 picks up shortly after the first one left off. After defeating Ares, Kratos is the new god of war, and quickly proceeds to piss off the rest of gods of Olympus by being his dickish Spartan self. The first level of the game sees Kratos become mortal and get chased across an entire city by a colossal statue. And after that it goes on at a pretty similar pace. I think this PA strip sums it up best. It has all the standard features that you have come to expect from this type of game, mostly combat and a few puzzles, but even the puzzles are pretty fucked up (I can’t get past these gears…better throw this guy in there to stop them). The controls have remained the same, and a couple of new moves have been added to Kratos’ blades. Also new in the game are a couple of new magic spells and weapons. Overall the game plays almost identical to the original, and has a really epic feel to it, which is appropriate since its Kratos vs Olympus.
Also, it comes with a second dvd, that contains a lot of behind the scenes extras.
Graphics
The game manages to squeeze every ounce of performance possible from the PS2, and the graphics are even better than the original. There are virtually no load times, and the levels are huge, as well as plenty of cut scenes. The detail in a lot of the levels is staggering. It’s a great sendoff for the PS2…not that it’s the last game that will be made for it (they were still releasing games for the PS1 last year)…its just the lat one that anyone will buy.
Sound
The soundtrack rocks, and the voice acting is very well done. Every battle sounds and feels like something out of 300 or Lord of the Rings.
Overall Review
I dont have an arbitrary system for rating games yet, so lets just close on this…you need to play this game, unless of course you’re this douchebag.

March is for Mediocrity

fierce Scuba | 2 Comments

marcellus-wallace.jpgLet’s face it folks. On Xbox360, we were spoiled in February and the beginning of March. MLB2K7 came out a week early and then we were treated to GRAW 2. I actually slowed down and had to make some buying decisions. 60 bucks a pop for an out of work gigolo is a little steep, but we all need to make sacrifices. Then came an overhyped 2 and a half weeks of future bargain bin titles. First came Def Jam Icon. This game had promise but was about as cool as running through a cornfield backwards naked in December. Marcellus Wallace doesn’t like to be fucked, and if you bought this game, well I hope you were wearing nail polish. A poor fighting system with no finishing moves and a tiresome story line made this sure fire hit a week rental at best.

Then came the UEFA Champions League. Granted soccer is not as mainstream as it should be, this game failed on every level. Scoring is too easy and your teammates have the attention span and reaction speed of a 3rd grader who shit his pants on the bus back from the apple cider factory. He meant well, but when its all said and done, he is stuck with shit and soon everyone will know.

Virtual tennis actually wasn’t that bad, but if you are a tennis fan you are probably french and can’t read this. “How is your french toast, Matt?” “Smelly and ungrateful, but this freedom toast is fantastic. Zing.

Finally Armored Core and TMNT. I knew TMNT was gonna suck but it was rushed out for the movie and has little to no replay value. I mean a second play through for some sweet box art almost had me camping out overnight. Armored Core on the other hand was a major disappointment. How can someone make robots with guns flying around shooting the living shit out of each other not cool? Sega did it. The graphics are not good and the missions are about as exciting as a monkey shit fight at the zoo. Come to think of it, monkey shit fights kick ass. Its ashame this game didn’t. I might freeze myself until Halo 3 shows up. On the other hand, I just might take off my pants and start the revolution.
