JetpacI have to say that this game is highly addictive and had me playing my first time out the gate for a couple of hours straight. The achievements are very difficult as most Xbox Live Arcade games are, but the gameplay is very intuitive and the graphics are crisp in HD. To start off with you are a small guy with a Jetpac that flys around. In order for you to get off the planet you are on (a.k.a. the level your on) you need to put together your ship and also fuel it. Each level is a kind of scavenger hunt to find the necessary pieces in order to go on to the next planet. In total there are over 140 boards with three different styles of weapons for you to use, as well as a nuke that will pretty much clear the board. The game costs a mere 400 MS points (5 bucks) and you also get the original version of Jetpac, which actually is pretty horrible and not worth playing. Highly recommend you at least checking out the demo for this bad boy, bravo to Rare on this great remake.

Overall Rating : 8.5 out of 10

xbox-360.jpgThe good people at Major Nelson have made the Pavlovian like sound file that occurs when an acheivement is unlocked ready for download. Anyone who has a reputable gamerscore has heard this sound umpteenth times and now it can be downloaded and maybe even made to be the sound my phone makes when I get a text message. To save, click on link, Save target as and you’re well on your way.

From Major’s site: This is for non-commercial, personal use only!

TMNT (XBLA) Impressions

drunk pandas | 0 Comments

TMNT Arcade ScreenshotSo I grabbed what I think is one of the funnest arcade games I ever played: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This gem from 1989 is now available on Xbox Live Arcade for 400 points. I spent a lot of time with the game the past two days, and I’m very impressed. The controls are spot on from the arcade, and it’s just as hard as I remember. You go through so many lives to get through the game. Thankfully there are unlimited continues in offline single player. In online co-op, you get 15 lives to start, and once you’re done… well, you’re done.

I played through co-op with taz8080 last night until we both died off. We got a little more than halfway through the game, just past where you fight Rocksteady and Bebop together. There’s tons to fun to be had both offline and online.

Achievements are pretty hard for this game. There’s a few of them where you have to get through parts without dying, which is near impossible in this game. My hat’s off to anyone who can get 200 points here.

If anyone wants some TMNT co-op, look for the Loot Ninja guys online.

Xbox Live / PlayStation Home Logos TogetherGameDaily Biz reports that Chris Satchell, general manager of Microsoft’s Game Developer Group, has weighed in on Sony’s new PlayStation Home service. It wasn’t very pretty either. Following Nintendo’s lead, Satchell pseudo-shit on Home. Sure, they’re competitors. Sure, Microsoft’s baby is Xbox Live. But you have to admit that Home is cool. Right? Right? I guess that’s a no then, Microsoft…

From the article:

[It’s] “not a very game-centric approach.”

Ok. I guess that’s understandable. Satchell further explains:

“I think they’ve definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they’re pushing in a different direction and we’ve sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here. I think theres is very much a vision that people see it and it looks cool but it’s fundamentally separate from the games - or at least what they’ve shown so far,” Satchell continued. “It’s a cool world but it’s like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it’s that games are the center and that’s the star of the show, that’s what people buy the console for.”

I can definitely see his point. The games should be the center. I really don’t see Home taking away from the gaming aspect of the system. I see it as a major accent point. It gives you a wordwide place to mingle, find friends to play a game with, play some arcade games and such, and show off what you’ve done. I’m sure people will be spending a hefty amount of time with Home, which I guess is the intention of Chris’s comments.

What are your thoughts on the Home service? Leave some comments.

Gamerscore - Why So Much Hate?

drunk pandas | 0 Comments

Xbox 360 Ring GreenThis story comes from my friend Y2J2K. While in a discussion in the MLB 2K7 forum on Xbox.com, people began to flame the hell out of him and anyone else with a high gamerscore. For starters, a “high gamerscore” is all relative. Having a high gamerscore doesn’t mean you play 360 games all day long. It also doesn’t mean you cheat to get there. Y2J2K wrote up a long but terrific letter to all the haters out there.

There have been some harsh comments directed to me in this and other threads but I have chosen to ignore them specifically and have not lashed back out t anyone. My only previous comment was basically the point I am making here which is a gamerscore does not define anyone and to make assumptions and conclusions about someone based on something as meaningless as a gamerscore is just plain ignorant. Yes, I just said gamerscore is meaningless which one might find amusing coming from someone with a high gamerscore (note I am not claiming my gamerscore is high but that seems to be the conclusion everyone else here is coming to so I might as well acknowledge it – again I have never nor would ever brag about my gamerscore).

I agree with essentially every point Y2J2K makes. Why have we, as gamers, become a group of haters? Anything different does not need to be shit on.

Challenge Complete

taz8080 | 0 Comments

Ok so I am done with the Old Spice challenge to raise my 360 gamer score by 1500 points and let me say this was a bit of a chore. I became obsessed with achievements and games just stopped being fun, but now it’s over and I can reap the benefits of cheesy merchandise from the sponsors. If you are interested in raising your gamer score very quickly here are three games to do it with:
NBA Live 07 - 750 points in a couple of hours easily.
Madden 06 - 1000 points in an afternoon, as long as you are patient and sim the 30 years of franchise.
Viva Pinata - 450 points for just playing the game, you can get it easily in a few hours.
Those three games will give you more than enough to raise your score for the challenge.
And if you need a hand getting those achievements just go here.

I was able to signup last night, and register for the challenge. Then the site went back down. I can now login and check status and everything like that, so it seems the challenge is working. I’ll be on my 360 all afternoon trying to rack up 1500 points as quick as possible

[Update] The site is up and running now, but you have to be sure to register and thenjoin the contest, I forgot to join and wasted 160 points I had earned.

Just a reminder that Achieve360Points is hosting a 1000 Person Online Event tonight for NBA Live 07 for Xbox 360. There’s a completely retarded achievement in the game for being online when there’s 1000 people online. Problem is, there’s never enough people online to get anywhere near that. So tonight, between 8-9PM EST, log into NBA Live 07 on your 360 and make sure to stay online the entire time. If you don’t want to play, just sit in an online lobby or listen to ESPN radio. Help out your fellow gamers so people can finally get this achievement!

[Update] It appears tonight’s event was a complete success! Congrats to everyone who got this elusive achievement. It was a great group effort and shows the community can pull together well for a measly 100 gamerscore points.
