In another week, you’ll be able to download the Hidden Fronts map pack for Gears of War on the Xbox 360 for free. That’s right, FREE. Previously costing 800 MS Points, the new free pack consists of four maps.
Bullet Marsh: In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.
Garden: This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilization and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.
Process: Teams must fight for control of this subterranean Imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.
Subway: Timgad’s Central Subway station used to serve as a central hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust.
These maps are needed for the extra 250 achievement points in the game. So now you don’t have to pay for that extra gamerscore.
In case you didn’t want to drop the 800 MS Points for the GRAW2 Throwback Pack that was released this past May, you can now download it for free for the Xbox 360.
The pack includes 7 remastered maps from the original Ghost Recon and the first GRAW.
Too little, too late I think. Most people have moved on from GRAW2 on the Xbox 360 and started playing other games. I think Ubisoft almost had to do this on 360 since the PS3 version will include these maps for free.
We previously told you about all the updates to Lost Planet that would bring some free maps to the Xbox 360. That time is now here.
Map Pack 3, which was previously 400 MS Points, is now available for the cool price of nothing. So if you still have the desire to play Lost Planet, fire up your 360 and grab these free maps, which include “Lost Technology,” “Ruins,” and “Ice Drop”.
I’m always a fan of free, and it’s not that often we get free stuff as downloads these days.
Capcom announced today that they are releasing a new patch as well as new multiplayer maps for Lost Planet on the PC. The new DX enhancement for Lost Planet PC will be released as an automatic download on August 16 and will utilize Geometry Shaders to improve the overall visual quality through beter depth of field effects and improve motion blurring.
This update will also provide the PC users with basic chatting functions such as 4 default message options to communicate with others in lobbies.
In addition, PC Map Pack #2 will be available for free download on the August 16 and includes the following four maps: “Battleground,” an abandoned town scattered with rubble from ruined buildings, featuring indoor/outdoor areas with multi-level vantage points; “Lost Technology,” a throw-back to the good ol’ days of pixelated 8-bit gaming, “Ruins,” ancient temples set amidst a lush jungle; and “Ice Drop,” a frigid glacier with lots of peaks, nooks and crannies. The total file size for PC Map Pack #2 will be 400 Mb.
As for the Xbox 360 community of Lost Planet fans. The “Lost Technology,” “Ruins,” and “Ice Drop” maps in PC Map Pack #2 are currently available as Map Pack #3 in the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet. In conjunction with the PC update on August 16 th, all these maps will also be made available for free download on Xbox Live Marketplace . A new patch addressing connectivity for players of the Xbox 360 version will be available in the next few weeks.
That is a lot of news from the folks over at Capcom, check it out.
Here’s an interview with the development team on Resistance: Fall of Man about the new Map Pack that is supposedly coming out in May. I’m guessing it’s going to be pushed back until June, since we haven’t heard anything yet.
The maps looks really cool, but $7.99 for 2 maps? Someone needs to stop taking a cue from Microsoft and some of the crap on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Mark Rein dropped a line on the official Gears forums to let everyone know that progress is being made on the next title update for Gears of War. Oh yeah, there’s 250 more Achievement Points coming too.
From the man himself (here and here):
The next Gears of War update is coming along nicely. We don’t have a release timeframe for it yet but I just wanted to let you know we’re making significant progress. In addition to the previously mentioned plan to improve roadie run we’re also going to have new achievements relating to Annex and the Hidden Fronts DLC. Of course no title update would be complete without more exploit squashing and the ever-popular “general housekeeping”.
The title update is free and that’s what contains the achievements. However some of the achievements are tied to things relating to playing the maps in the Hidden Fronts map pack which currently costs money but will be made free in a few months.
Here’s a trailer for the pseudo-new maps in the Throwback Pack coming for GRAW2 that’s available today for 800 MS Points ($10). Personally, I think this is severly overpriced for some old maps.
Halo 2 for Windows Vista will be available June 2007 and comes with much anticipation. Many gamers believe FPS games are best played with a mouse and keyboard, since I played hundreds of hours on the Xbox already I think I will pass on this one.
A couple of things that do interest me in the Windows Vista version are the map editor, which will alloy people to edit and make their own personal versions of maps and the 2 new multiplayer maps that are specific to the PC version, District and Uplift.
The PC version will get it’s own servers to play off and will actually allow gamers to now play the game from the disc, this mean no more having to load the entire game on your hard drive, but instead playing it like you would off your console.
From the press release:
Key Features:
• Exciting single-player gameplay. Experience firsthand the epic struggle between Master Chief and the Covenant armada. Brandish dual-wield weapons and Covenant arms, while piloting human and non-human vehicles and aircraft to battle intelligent AI alien enemies.
• Unmatched online gaming. “Halo 2” for Windows Vista will tap into the power of Games for Windows — LIVE to deliver online matchmaking for its Gold account members. The service will enable Windows Vista gamers around the globe to connect via their PCs and play in an innovative and competitive online forum.
