This editor was wondering with the recent controversy surrounding Jack Thompson once again, just what his real agenda is? Is Jack Thompson even a gamer? Does he just decide to pick video games as his topic to fight over because no one else had yet?

I am betting he hasn’t picked up a controller in his life, but I was curious what our readers thought, here is the poll (I know what my vote will be):

What do you think Jack Thompsons level of gaming is?

Jeanne d’Arc (PSP) Impressions

drunk pandas | 0 Comments

Jeanne d’Arc Screen

There’s not much to do on vacation in the middle of the wilderness on a lake with no internet, cell phone service, and only 3 channels on TV. Thankfully I had my PSP and a copy of Jeanne d’Arc. I got to spend a good deal of time with the massive handheld RPG and I’m very impressed. The story revolves around Jeanne (aka Joan of Arc for those Westerners out there) trying to save France in the Hundred Years War. Throw in some demons helping the English and King Henry gets possessed, and you’ve got yourself a grade A RPG.

The graphics look good for a PSP title. There’s a lot of anime pre-rendered cut scenes which are very cool, and the in game graphics have a nice cell shaded feel to them. As expected in an RPG, there’s a lot of reading and not a lot of talking. I really wish some developer would put voice overs in for RPG’s. With the size limitations on the UMD disk, I doubt it would make it onto the PSP anyway.

The gameplay is fluid with a very compelling story. You have battles at virtually every setting you visit. The battles consist of your outfit fighting against demons and English soldiers, which a specific task to win (ie. defeat the English soldier, move your troops to the North end, etc). For the turn based combat, you move your selected troop to where you need him/her to attack or use a spell, item, etc., then go at it. Even though it’s semi-repetitive, you don’t get that feel from the game due to the different environments and choice in what 5 troops you want to fight.

Overall, I’m having a very good time with Jeanne d’Arc. It’s a very long game, clocking in at around 40 hours, which is monstrous for the PSP. I think that may detract some buyers who are looking for quick pick-me-up games on their handheld. I’ll have a full review up later this week as I get some more time with the game.

EA Games LogoWith the new Madden 08 it looks like EA decided to make all of the Xbox 360 achievements in the game related to on field stats like yardage of runs, passes, returns, etc. They have done away with the achievements associated with playing online and also with any achievements attributed to a season mode. Typically there is an achievement for completing X number of games or winning the super bowl, but it seems this year they are also missing.

Has EA tossed down the gauntlet to the players and challenged us to earn our Gamerscore the old fashioned way? Did EA think the achievments of the previous years were too easy and decided to increase the difficulty on us gamers? You be the judge.

Ther are a total of 48 achievements each ranging in difficulty and points value, but all associated with very specific feats that need to be accomplished during gameplay. Unfortuantely it does not mention what difficulty it needs to be accomplished on, I can only hope that it needs to be done on default or higher, if not people will just gimp the AI and get easy points.

You can find the list of achievements here courtesy of Achieve360points.com:

stranglehold.jpg

This much anticipated demo is believed to be the reason for the Xbox Live crash yesterday. Apparently so many people were downloading it, it brought he servers to their knees. After playing it, twice, the game could be a monster. The game is designed after Chinese action movies that are purposely over the top in action and stunts. Think Chow Yun Fat who is the main character and many of the things he has done. The story revolves around the death of a cop and Inspector Tequila’s(Fat) fight to find out the killer. Though this is a third person shooter, it is a little far from realistic, but that is intended.

The game took a piece from the James Bond games where you can use the environment to your advantage for some skill kills. The better the kill will fill up your Tequila Bomb meter that allows for your special moves such as health, an super accurate shot, and a barrage attack. These are essential when their are dozens of enemies shooting at you. In the demo you will have a pair of pistols, then a shotgun that can be picked up.

OJ Simpson

In the very very remote chance he didn’t do it, I would feel bad for OJ. Not only is he giving up money left and right from his pension and other means to the Goldman family, but now he has to pay them any money he makes from his likeness being used in All Pro Football 2K8.

According to GamesIndustry.biz:

The fees, royalties and other compensation that Simpson was paid for appearing in All-Pro Football 2K8 will now go towards paying the USD 33.5 million judgement won by Goldman’s family in 1997.

Of course, there’s still the ever so remote possibility he didn’t do it. It’s more likely that aliens built the pyramids, but hey, there’s still a chance.

PlayStation Store Stock Image

I was thinking earlier today about PS1 titles on the PlayStation Store. So far, the selection has been very sparse. I began to wonder what titles I’d like most to see up for download. Here’s the list I can up with:

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Gran Turismo 2
  • Resident Evil Series
  • Final Fantasty VII
  • Chrono Cross
  • Syphon Filter Series

What games do you want to see added? Let’s put together a big Loot Ninja list and send it off to Sony.

[Update] At the end of the week, I’ll be compiling a list of the top 25 requested games and will send that off to Sony. So keep up the good work and post what games you’d most like to see!

metallica.jpgThe seven and a half minute powerslap rock opera known as One will also be coming to Guitar Hero 3 this fall reports our friends at joytstiq. The track was rumored to be a Rock Band exclusive but has found its way to expand to both titles. Expect both of these games to duel it out this holiday season for rock supremacy.

Lair - EB Delay

According to EB Games, Lair has been delayed until September 4th from it’s previously scheduled August 12th release date. Gamefly has also changed it’s release date, but they’re showing September 6th (most likely to account for getting enough copies in to rent to customers). Screenshots taken in case they change it back (EB Games above, Gamefly after the jump).

We’ve previously heard the game has gold gold directly from Sony. What could be causing the delay? Either they pulled the game to fix a last minute issue or they ran into some production problems. Either way, this doesn’t bode well for Sony.

The game looks now to be releasing on the same date as Heavenly Sword. If this rumor proves to be true, Lair will certainly get overshadowed.

[UPDATE] Sony just confirmed the new September 4th release date on PlayStation.Blog.

Rumor Mill: Overlord Coming to PS3

drunk pandas | 5 Comments

Overlord Image

Could PS3 users get to fool around with minions in the near future? It seems plausible, giving a recent job posting on the Triumph Studios website for PS3 programmers.

The job posting calls for a coder with PS2 and/or PS3 experience for “Porting X360/PC code base to PS3.” Now let’s think about that for a second. Triumph Studios’ last game (aside from Overlord) was an Age of Wonders expansion in 2003. Unless they have some new, unannounced games coming our way, this job posting most likely means we’ll be seeing Overlord land on the PS3 in the near future.

What do you think? Would you like to see Overlord on other consoles? Personally, I love the game, but I’m not a big fan of ports showing up months or years later for other platforms.

Hi Im a Mac

That’s right Mac fans, you’ll get your chance to frag away with both of Epic’s non-console versions here. No longer will you need to use Boot Camp to switch over to Windows.

Mark Rein confirmed the news during Game Head, which airs late Friday nights on SpikeTV. Rein enthusiastically announces in the video:

And don’t forget, we’re also doing Macintosh. Yes, Gears is coming to the Mac and so is UT.

This is great news for anyone thinking that Mac can’t compete in gaming. With most major games now being released simultaneously for Windows and Mac, and John Carmack developing a crazy new game engine on the Mac, there’s little holding anyone back from switching.

I can’t wait to get my Macbook Pro…
