Want to take care of a squirrel on your phone?

taz8080 | 1 Comment

SquirrelWell now you can. Following the Giga pets and Nintendogs craze comes Virtual Squirrel from DS Effects, where you have to take care of… you guessed it a virtual squirrel. (Not too creative with the titles over at DS Effects, are we?) You can feed it and care for it or torture the squirrel and starve it, I wonder if you can train it to take nuts out of their shells?

From the official press release:

The objective is to take care of your virtual squirrel. You can clean him, train him, feed him, and make him study, amongst other things. He can die if you let him starve or grow sick if you leave him alone for too long.

The game is available for all java-enabled phones. A free wap version, including Apple’s iPhone, is also available.

Jobs Apologizes, Gives $100 iPhone Credit

taz8080 | 2 Comments

JobsLooks like the outcry of early adoptors hearing of the price break has worked. The Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs publicy apologized and offered $100 credits this afternoon to customers who had already shelled out the $599 full price for their iPhone. Many were unhappy when the company unexpectedly slashed the price $200 in a push to boost holiday sales. At least a $100 rebate is not a bad compromise and a great show of good faith by Apple, think of the extra $100 you paid as a fee to get them first.

iPhone Price Drop

drunk pandas | 11 Comments

iPhone Image

If you’ve been wanting an iPhone but didn’t want to spend the money, you’re in luck. At yesterday’s media event, Steve Jobs announced the 4gb iPhone would be going the way of the 20gb PS3, and the 8gb iPhone would see a price drop to $399. That’s a $200 price drop for those counting.

Sucks for early adopters with this huge price drop just 2 months after release, but this is going to sell a LOT more iPhones for Apple.

Check out our review here if you need some more information. The iPhone is easily the best mobile device I’ve ever had.

iPhone Review

drunk pandas | 8 Comments

iPhoneSo I’ve had my iPhone for about two weeks now and absolutely love it. I moved from Verizon with a BlackBerry 8703e to AT&T with the iPhone. Here’s what I’ve found after using it for personal and business use for the past two weeks. Be warned, this could take a while.

The reception is great with AT&T. I have signal everywhere and more than with Verizon. I had a few issues where I live with some dead zones with Verizon, and I now have signal in most of those with AT&T. There’s no places where I had signal before and don’t now, which is great.

The EDGE speed has been widely discussed as slow. I’m not going to lie, it isn’t blazing fast. Coming from an EVDO device with Verizon, I was expecting it to be brutal, and it’s really not. It’s not that much slower than the EVDO I had for mobile browsing. I’m sure tethering would be a different story, but that’s not an issue for me. For email, EDGE is plenty fast. For web browsing, it’s not the best, but does the job when you need to. Google Maps over EDGE isn’t that bad either. I was honestly expecting a lot worse.

The way to combat the EDGE speed was to include WiFi, and Apple made it very easy to work with on the iPhone. If you’re in range of a wireless network, the iPhone will prompt you to join. Once you join, that network is added to your preferred network list and the iPhone will automatically join when in range. This helps a lot when you’re home or at the office where there’s a WiFi signal.

Bejeweled Free for iPhone

drunk pandas | 1 Comment

Bejeweled ImageIf you got your hands on an iPhone in the past few weeks, you can now get your first great iPhone native game. PopCap Games has announced that their hit game Bejeweled is free for the iPhone.

To play the game, just point your Safari browser on your iPhone to PopCap’s website.

Not a downloadable game like many of PopCap’s popular PC games, the Safari web-browser based game still delivers players all the original functionality and gameplay that helped create Bejeweled fever. Making use of the iPhone’s Web 2.0, unique screen options and wireless technologies, Bejeweled for iPhone offers the new mobile platform the first officially produced title by a well-known game developer for Apple and AT&T’s popular cell phone.

This is going to make me less productive with my iPhone, that’s for damn sure.

iPhone Impressions

drunk pandas | 0 Comments

iPhoneYes, I got an iPhone. I didn’t wait in line, I didn’t sell my first-born, and I didn’t have to donate a kidney. For whatever reason, my parents decided this would be a great early wedding gift. Hey, I’m not going to complain

So by now, I’m sure you’ve read countless reviews about this thing and what it can and cannot do. I’m not going to focus on that because, well, everyone else has. I’m going to give you my real world hands on impressions.

I’ve been using a BlackBerry 8700 series for the past few years now. I’m a hardcore email user (without being linked to an Exchange server), so I need something that’s going to hold up to a lot of typing. When I first tried the iPhone, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to type on the keyboard. You’re going to think this is the same bullshit everyone else is saying, but you really need to just trust the software. I went ahead and just hammered away with both thumbs close to the keys of the words I wanted to type. And guess what? There wasn’t a single error. I’ve been doing that since I got the phone now and I pick up maybe one or two small errors in emails and SMS here and there, but nothing major. Because of this, I’m typing a lot faster than I ever did with my Blackberry (and I was pretty fast on that too).

Rumor Mill – Will Apple Name a new iPhone Nano?

taz8080 | 0 Comments

Jobs iPhoneWith E3 looming around a lot of rumors are circulating. One that caught my attention is a rumor that Apple is already looking to expand it’s product portfolio of phones and add an iPhone Nano. Don’t start drooling yet as this is still unsubstantiated but just think of the possibilities, a tiny phone with iPhone capabilities?? I wonder what kind of contract you will have to sign in order to get one of those, perhaps a 3 year contract that is exclusive to T-Mobil now?

iPhone lasts longer than expected

taz8080 | 0 Comments

Jobs iPhoneLooks like after some additional testing the iPhone has more juice than Apple thought. It is boasting some serious talk time, internet time and standby time.

“Apple said the iPhone would provide up to eight hours of mobile phone talk time, or six hours of Internet use, compared with its previous expectation for five hours of talk time issued in January.

Apple said the top surface of the touch-screen phone, due to ship on June 29 and priced at about $500 to $600, has also been upgraded to optical-quality glass from plastic, making it more resistant to scratches.

Apple said its device can support seven hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback and more than 10 days of standby time.“

In a cell phone market that is super saturated right now, with everyone and their momma making a phone, battery life, reception and functions become king. If the iPhone can offer great functionality and superior battery life they may hit this market hard, if AT&T can give them some good tower coverage. Check out the whole article here.

id Software New Game Engine

drunk pandas | 1 Comment

At yesterday’s Apple WWDC (that’s Worldwide Developer Conference for the lay person), id Software’s John Carmack demoed the new game engine he’s been working on, dubbed id Tech 5.

Looks pretty damn cool. As per Carmack, more will be shown at E3 on the specific game being developed on this engine for Mac, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Sounds like a plan to me.
