Halo Movie Rumors Resurfacing Thanks To Reach Money Machine

You kinda saw this one coming. Now that the money pile created by Halo:Reach is high enough (it grossed $200 million on the first day) there are rumors that Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks Pictures are working on securing the rights to the Halo franchise in order to get a film off the ground.

Now, this isn’t the first time that Spielberg’s name has been attached to rumors of a Halo film. Over a year ago, the same rumor was circulating but with nothing solid materializing out of it. One of the major hurdles in bringing Halo to theatres has been Microsoft’s unwillingness to let anyone throw a monkey wrench into their money machine by giving us another Super Marios Bros (Gawd, just typing that made my fingers want to throw up) film.

Now one way that Spielberg and Dreamworks are sidestepping the whole game rights issue is by basing their project off the series of Halo novelizations, which is a different media and thus tangentially associated with the electronic media of the game. Hopefully having Spielberg reiterating his interest in the project will prompt Microsoft to get on board.

Gears Of War 3: Dedicated Servers And Multiplayer Beta Inbound

Straight from the Gears of War page of Xbox.com comes Gears of War 3 news that the Cliffy B. money machine known as Epic Games will be providing dedicated servers “…to drive a balanced, optimized, and thrilling online experience for Gearheads everywhere.” Also let slip is that a multiplayer beta will be released to give us a taste of the match types and weapons available for fans to complain about.

I haven’t played a Gears game in many moons, so it may be time to oil up my Lancer chainsaw and commence with the Grub mulchin’ so I don’t get my ass reamed by some 11 year old in Tulsa when Gears 3 comes out.

Gears of War 3 is an Xbox 360 exclusive and is set to release in the Fall of 2011.

More details regarding the dedicated servers and beta will be revealed in the current issue of Official Xbox Magazine coming to book shelves.

Just Cause Coming To The Big Screen. Why? Just ‘Cause.

"Excuse me, pilot. Ohh crap".

See what I did there? Well, here comes another nail in the coffin of the video game to movie adaptation genre of films. L+E Pictures has just obtained the rights to Avalanche Studio’s Just Cause game in order bring everyone’s favorite grappling hook and parachute wielding, government destabilizing, red barrel shooting CIA spook Rico Rodriguez to the big screen.

H.P. Lovecraft + Del Toro + THQ = Me Happy

The word is out, from Guillermo Del Toro himself, that he has begun collaboration on a “Lovecraftian” series of horror games with THQ. Being a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan myself, this is fantastic news. If you have never read any of Lovecraft’s work, do yourself a favor and pick up one of the compilation books that are out there. There isn’t much in the way of specifics about the games available, of course, but we can expect to not see any of the games until 2013 at the earliest. Why you gotta tease a brotha’ like ‘dat, Willie? With a development cycle this long, Del Toro at the helm and great source material, I’m looking forward to something expansive, horrifying, and downright maddening. Del Toro is already set to direct a film adaptation of Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness”, so now I’m wondering if this will tie in with the film somehow. Stay tuned!

Myst Film Looking For Director

I have to be honest with you, I never played any of the Myst games. I do know that there wasn’t a very cohesive story other than the game takes place on an island and there is something about books and puzzles. The game spawned several sequels that sold well, but I’ve never had a PC powerful enough to play anything more graphically complicated than Minesweeper so I’m at a loss as to how this game is going to translate to the big screen. I know the game is huge with PC gamers, so this is obviously a money grab for whatever studio is working on this, but with so many more popular console games out there with a broader fan base I’m confused as to why a studio would choose a title that’s pretty obscure to non PC gamers. I’m all kinds of “meh” about this news, but I’ll keep the Loot-Ninja community posted with any new developments. If we have any Myst fans in the Loot-Ninja community I’d love to hear from you and what you think about this news. Maybe you an turn my “meh” into a “hmm”. Trust me, that’s a step up.

Left 4 Dead Film Director Interview

Hey folks, I told you it was comin’ and here it is: the interview with the Left 4 Dead movie directors I promised you. The guys were kind enough to answer some questions I sent them earlier this week and provide some insight into the film’s ongoing production. This is a really dedicated bunch of film makers who are financing this endeavor out of their own pockets and with the help of donations from fans.

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West Makes U-Turn

Apparently “go big or go home” is the mantra in Hollywood when it comes to making animated CGI features out of game properties. Turns out that when Ninja Theory pitched the idea for a full length animated film for Enslaved: Odyssey To The West and boasted about how inexpensively it could be made, the big wigs at some Hollywood studios thought “Mmm. not so much. We really don’t care for your conservative estimates. The budget should at least dwarf the National debt and feature a talking cowboy doll”. So, it looks like gamer’s appetites will have to be sated solely with the game when it releases on October 8th for both PS3 and Xbox 360. To get you up to speed, here’s the trailer for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West:

Asura’s Wrath: Don’t Eff With The Buddha

I came across the trailer for Asura’s Wrath and I gotta say that this has definitely piqued my almost as much as Bayonetta did when I first saw the trailer for it. The action and art style looks like Dragon Ball Z and Godhand had a baby and then that baby got drunk and violated Kratos. I mean, how many games have you played that let you pick up a 30 foot stone column and use it as a battering ram and then fend off the wrath of a planet sized Buddha and his flaming index finger of death? Exactly. So here you go, the insane trailer for Capcom’s Asura’s Wrath:

Dead Space 2 Multiplayer Beta Rolling Out

Word is out that EA and Visceral games have let a few lucky PS3 owners in on a closed Beta for the multiplayer component to Dead Space 2. As we previously reported, the multiplayer side will pit two teams of 4 players against each other, one side taking the role of Sprawl security officers and the other playing the part of the Necromorphs. Of course, I don’t have a PS3 because I’m broke and if I buy one more system my wife will make sure it meets the business end of a hammer. So, this means I won’t be trying the multiplayer unless/until it’s rolled out to Xbox live Gold subscribers. You hear that, Microsoft? Stop worrying about hands motion control gaming and get with the program: I already have one paperweight and it’s called a Wii.

Dead Space 2 Multiplayer Revealed

For those of us that don’t have our faces buried in some Spartan’s cod piece, there are other games out there worth paying attention to. Gametrailer TV recently posted a trailer featuring in game footage of Dead Space 2‘s multiplayer component.
