Review: Carnivores: Ice Age

Tatem Games and Action Form are back with a second installment of their Carnivores series. This one, set in the Ice Age, pits you against a bevy of Pleistocene era creatures, both herbivore and carnivore, ranging from the feared Saber Tooth, to the fabled Wooly Mammoth and Wooly Rhinoceros. But is this game worth the scratch?

Fans of the series, or even folks who read our previous review on Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter will remember the two game modes. Hunt, and Survive. This latest offering does away with the Survive mode of gameplay, and focuses solely on the Hunt mode, and collecting trophies for your trophy room. Really, not much has changed at all. The gameplay is exactly the same, the weapons load-outs are exactly the same, and the point/multiplier ratios are exactly the same. The only changes from the first game are the maps, the prey, and the elimination of the Survival mode.

Overall, the game is still solid. Choose your prey, weapon, and map. Then decide if you want camouflage, cover scent, radar, or tranquilizer darts. Each option will affect the score garnered per kill, based on a percentage. If you really liked the first installment, or if you are just dying for something to satiate your penchant for dinosaur hunting, this will do it. It’s definitely not a bad game, they just took the approach of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”. They gave you a swarm of new animals to hunt, and a bunch of new maps to explore, so it’s still a decent purchase at $2.99.
