Guess what? The courts agreed with Sony. Geohot’s hard drive will be made available to the PlayStation 3 console manufacturer in order to search for all files related to the PS3 Jailbreak. If George Hotz was sitting there saying “No whammies… no whammies… no whammies”, he apparently yelled “Stop” at the wrong time.
When Geohot’s lawyers complained that this wasn’t like a child pornography case, where inspecting the contents of the defendant’s hard drive is commonplace, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston dropped the line of the day: “That’s the breaks”.
I commend Sony is doing their due diligence here in trying to thwart and remove the PS3 Jailbreak however they can, but the code is already out there. Once it gets into the wild, it’s tough to pull it back. The only way they can do something meaningful is to fully block access to the PSN for anyone running a Jailbreak - ban consoles, ban IP addresses, ban emails and PSN ID’s. Keep the hackers away from the online network where they can truly ruin the online gaming experience of everyone else (see Modern Warfare 2 on PS3). They’ve taken large steps, but there’s still a long way to go.
