You know they’re trying to make an Uncharted movie right? Around one of Sony’s staple franchises for the PS3? We’ve seen a few rumors floating around about David O. Russell wanting Mark Wahlberg to play Drake and possibly getting Robert DeNiro or Joe Pesci involved. But never heard such stupidity out of the director who is going to bring the game to the silver screen.
Anybody who has played through or heard about either the first or second Uncharted game should have a pretty good grasp on the storyline and can sort of imagine what a movie would play and look like. But the one person, one person who “says” he’s played through the game (I’m sorry, his KIDS have) but doesn’t know the first thing about the games is the movie’s own director, David O. Russell.
In a recent interview with IGN in the UK, Mr. Russell sat down and shed a little light on the Uncharted movie project, and promptly gave off the vibe he has no fucking idea what the game is like or about. Here’s one of the questions IGN asked the Oscar nominated director:
IGN: Of all the video game movies, why was Uncharted the one for you?
David O. Russell: Because it’s centered around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys, they’re tough but they’re working on this crazy case, and they can’t do it without truth. I think that’s cool.
I’m sorry……centered around a family? What family? The salty Sully character? Hey fuckwad, he’s not Drake’s father. He’s a father figure for players to relate to, but not a father to Drake. What about the kids? Where in the hell is Drake’s kids? And a wife? Last I heard Drake was boning it out with Chloe in an all night long orgy fest? Yep! Totally sounds family-centric to me.
The point is, the Uncharted series is about the lone Indiana Jones/Lara Croft Drake character who sets off on a great adventure and meets a few friends (and fuck buddies) along the way. This is the formula for both Uncharted games. Why can’t this director see that?
This is why kids, Hollywood directors fuck up movies based on games. These people who don’t even play the source material think they have a good grasp on the concept and think it will make money, only to fuck up and taint the reputation of yet another movie based on a video game. Of all the game’s made into movies, I can really on think of a couple that stood out (the original Resident Evil and the more recent Prince of Persia movie wasn’t half bad).
There’s only one person involved in the movie that needs to know about Drake: the director. He doesn’t. The one person who is supposed to bring his vision, his style and his storytelling elements to the bring screen? Doesn’t.
So Mr. Russell, you want to make a story about family-centric movie about some treasure hunters? That’s fine. Just don’t call it Uncharted. You do your own damn thing and don’t taint a loving franchise crafted by Naughty Dog.

For shame! This is bad news. This movie could be a hit if someone put the TLC in it that it deserves.
I was already pissed off enough that Mark Wahlberg was playing Drake. Don’t get me wrong Marky Mark can be good. But the characters he does good with are only pissed off irish/boston guys. Anybody with wit or personality AKA Drake, he can’t do. It just doesn’t work. Someone like Nathan Filian however would do a much better job
