Quick Impressions: Mass Effect 2 on PS3

We’ll have a review of Mass Effect 2 on PS3 coming soon, but I wanted to give you some quick bullet points to keep in mind if you’re thinking of picking up the game. Right now, there are some issues, so take this all into consideration:

  • Cerberus Network is having issues. The laptop does not open on the right side of the main menu, meaning you can’t get in to download Zaeed or any of the other free DLC content at this point. I was able to download Cerberus from the PlayStation Store and could access the interactive comic after the initial title sequence, but nothing more.
  • If you’re buying from the PSN, it’s a 12GB download plus over 680MB for the Cerberus Network. It took me around 4 hours to download on my 15 Mbps connection and another 45-60 minutes to install it. Make sure you have the space and bandwidth to grab it all.
  • I started a new game and experienced two hard crashes within the first half hour of play, each resulting in needing to power down my PS3. I can’t say if this exists in the disc based version, but both times it’s occurred before I even got to Miranda. If you’re wondering, I have a PS3 Slim with the stock 120GB hard drive (bought this within the first month of the PS3 Slim’s release). I almost never have system lock ups.
  • The game looks fantastic - better than the Xbox 360 version, hands down. It looks much better than the PS3 demo and I experienced no screen tearing as I did in the demo.
  • When I could play it, the game fest crisp and everything worked well. It’s just the crashing and lack of Cerberus Network that are giving me problems.

We’ll have more on the game and a full review once the issues get ironed out. But since it’s a big game and a lot of you are excited to grab it, we wanted to get some info to help in your purchase decisions. Any questions on the game as I keep trying to get through for my review? Hit the comments!
