Review: Forsaken (iPhone)

Forsaken is a top-down fantasy-adventure game from Cardboard Box Studios. The name of this game is high-score, essentially seeing how long you can last, how deep into the dungeon you can go, and how many points you can aquire. I like to call this a “dump game”, perfect for when you have extra time on the throne to deal with that Supreme Extra Meat Gyro you wolfed down at lunch down at your local gas-station.

You start by selecting a character — you can choose from 4 character types, Warrior, Priest, Mage, and Archer. Each character type has a primary and secondary attack, as well as a single magic spell. Then you select the dungeon size you wish to explore, Small, Medium, and Large. The dungeons have two themes, Winter and Classic, to mix up the visuals a little. Also, the dungeons maps are randomly generated, so it’s never the same game twice for near-infinite replay value. The dungeons are a series of small rooms and chambers, each one holding a different combination of monsters and creatures ready to tear you limb from limb.

Vanquish these foes and find the dungeon key in each level of the map to go deeper and deeper into the dungeons. It’s a play-until-you-drop style of game, with the ultimate goal being the top score. The gameplay is fun and engaging, and some monsters are faster than others, keeping you on your toes. On-Screen joystick and attack controls are decent, if a little sluggish. This is a great game for mindless hacking and spellcasting, and fans of the genre will find it challenging and fun.

  1. Gotta love dump games. Angry Birds and PvZ are staples for me in that respect.
