Review: Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans took 1980 by storm. At the time of its release, it was unlike anything the people had ever seen. The live action clay-mation, cyborg Owls, flying horses, and the Kraken made Clash an awesome movie. You look at it now and laugh your balls off. The Clash of the Titans video game falls under the same banner. A few years ago, this game would have been awesome. When compared to present day standards, it is just another God of War clone that falls incredibly short of fair comparison to the point of unplayable.

Insert generic video game based on a movie critical statement here. Since Clash was coming out months after the movie, we thought maybe it would avoid the curse. Nope. The glaring problem about Clash is that it does not do one thing overly well. The graphics are just okay. The combat is flawed and the mission set up is questionable at best. My biggest issue here is the secondary weapon system. It is an absolute chore to set up. The game has many, many weapons which is a fun change to this genre, but to suffer through menu after menu is tiresome. Secondly, you need to do some Soul Drain on your enemies, which only partially hurts them, to be even able to use the secondary weapons which often play a crucial part in playing the game. You basically have to “soul farm” every enemy to use your special weapons on other enemies. Not that much fun.

The game is also completely on rails. You are given a huge world to play in, but unless the path you walk down is 100% involved in that mission, expect an NPC, gate, rock, etc. to block your path. This tells me one thing: Here is a sandbox, but you can only play where we say and when. What is the point? You have the option to accept quests. If you deny, you are stuck. So, what is the point again? Here is an option, if you refuse, we will ask you again. The game pretends it gives you options, but at the same time, doesn’t. The voice acting is bad. Sam Worthington is not in the game. I don’t know who is, but it was a sub par job.

I hate being overly critical of video games because I know how much work it goes into making them. I’m sure some really talented people were tasked with this project and they did not do a very good job. The game gets super boring, super quick. There are a ton of must play games right now and much better games for this genre from this and last generation. It begs the overall question: Why do I want to play this if it isn’t any fun? The answer is simple.
