Review: Funkball Worlds (iPhone)

Ball-rolling games have been a popular genre on the iPhone, and rightly so. The device’s accelerometer is perfect for moving a rolling object back and forth across the screen. A few games have recently caught my eye in this realm, particularly Rolando 2 and Labyrinth 2. Funkball Worlds from Handmark is the latest in the line of ball-rolling games where you have to avoid obstacles and collect stars to finish each level in as little time as possible. Is it worth your cash? Read on.

The gameplay in Funkyball Worlds is very simple: tilt your iPhone to roll the ball and tap the screen to jump. If you want to roll faster, tilt the iPhone further. If you want to jump higher, hold the screen longer before releasing your finger. During the course of play, you’ll have to avoid mines, lasers, rocket launchers and the like as you strive to collect each star and finish the level under par time. There are 3 worlds, each containing 24 levels of increasing difficulty for you to play.

The gameplay is fun in short bursts, which is great for the iPhone. My only complaint is with the jump mechanic, of which I prefer the Rolando method of flicking the screen instead of tapping and holding to perform a jump. I fell off platforms a few times because I didn’t hold the screen long enough to jump to the proper height. Otherwise, Funkyball Worlds is a fun experience. You can unlock a ton of OpenFeint achievements to keep you coming back for me. For $0.99, it’s well worth the purchase.

Very cool. I’m still a fan of Jelly Car but this simple gameplay stuff is where its at! It’s perfect for sitting in a Jiffy Lube waiting for your car to get done.
