Xbox Live Activity for Week of August 4th

bungie3qy.jpg

Halo 3 remains on top yet again. With the promising of huge changes come this September in matchmaking, I can’t see anything overtaking it. Soul Cal IV is a new comer along with the Madden demo. Expect Madden 2009 to make a huge splash next week when the new data comes in. Nice to see an XBLA title in their as well. Maybe Bionic Commando: Rearmed will join it.

Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (based on UU’s)
1 Halo 3
2 Call of Duty 4

4 Gears of War
5 Rock Band
6 Guitar Hero III

Review: Soul Caliber IV (PS3 & Xbox 360)

sciv3.jpg

Developer: Project Soul Publisher: Namco Bandai, Ubisoft (EU)

Release date: 7/29/2008, 7/31/2008 (Japan, Europe)

I GOT SOUL…AND I’M SUPER BAD!- James Brown

Well well. It’s finally here. About friggin’ time, I think.

Let me start off by saying that although this newest release in the Soul Caliber world doesn’t re-define the genre, it’s an amazing play and easily the best in the series. Jesus, this almost makes you forget that SCIII even existed. Almost.

Oh, and just because there has been so mush emphasis in past months I’ll get this out of the way as well: Darth Vader and Yoda are merely alright to play as. Yoda is short, neigh-impossible to grab and has some cool jumping attacks. Vader’s moves are unfortunately based off of the original trilogy - meaning that they’re slow and completely unimpressive (but powerful - wheee). Seriously, it’s like having a palsy victim on the roster. I don’t even like typing these words because I’ve been so jazzed about these characters coming to the series. And while things like well integrated force powers work for their presence, they really don’t fit in all that well. A couple plays through is all you need. Maybe when Vader and Yoda cross platforms there will be more reason to use them.

Starkiller, the Apprentice from the upcoming Force Unleashed is moderately badass (but still make you yawn, although certainly better than the others). He moves more as I envisioned Darth Vader would. Huh. Even the stages are a little boring. All in all, disappointing. So many fan boys are Mother-F**king their computer screens right now and I’m truly sorry that it has to be that way. E-mail the developer if you like. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you. Review: Madden 2009 (PS3 & Xbox 360)

Madden 09 Cover Jets Xbox 360

It’s hard to believe that it has been 20 years since John Madden Football came our way. It has stood the test of time against all other football games and is now the only show in town. Gamers have said the past few installments have grown stale and are nothing more than glorified roster updates and weak game play additions such as the passing cone and lead blocker control. Anyone who thinks Madden 2009 is another attempt to lure 60 bucks away from us needs to believe me when I say this: This is the best Madden to date.

Bionic Commando: Evolution Trailer

Bionic Commando was one of the best side shooters to ever come out on the NES. Bionic Commando: Rearmed is one of the best XBLA titles to date. Bionic Commando for the next gen is looking better everyday. This trailer shows the evolution from then until now. Its remarkable how things have come in the past 20 years.

Gears of War 2 Collectors Edition Steps it Up

Gears of War Lancer

Remember the sweet Master Chief helmet you got for $129.99 that you couldn’t wear or interact with at all?  The same one that was going for 60 bucks a few months later?  Gears of War 2 is giving you an actual Lancer, thats the chainsaw gun for you noobs, that has a pullable trigger and real chainsaw sounds.  They say life-size, but it’s probably much smaller than an actual gun. It seems that if they want people to shed more than twice the price for some extra content, they need to give them cool toys. I would have bought a Halo 3 Legendary if I got a Battle rifle or a life-sized Cortana blow up doll.  The Gears 2 bundle goes for $139.99

Review: Alone in the Dark (Xbox 360)

Alone in the Dark 6

Making a horror game is a lot like making a horror movie in that its very difficult to scare people but at the same time entertain them. Herein lies the task of Alone in the Dark. The game has some great ideas and some amazing fire effects, but a bland story and sub-par control systems might make you want to stay in the dark as long as you can.

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop, Controls Detailed

Dead Rising: Chop Til Your Drop, Controls Detailed
As most of you are probably aware of there is a new version of Dead Rising come to your Wii very soon. Aside from what some are calling dumbed down graphics and a lot less zombies on screen not much else has been heard about this title until now. We got a detailed understanding on how the Wii specific controls will play out.

When using a gun the player simply has to aim and fire for dear life. The targeting reticule will turn red indicating you have found the enemy’s weak spot allowing for maximum damage. To reload your firearm simply shake the Wii Remote and you’re good to go.

Making use of the motion controls (aka erratic shaking) when a Zombie latches onto you merely give them ‘the don’t argue’ and free yourself by Shaking the Wii remote. Other weapons will use the Wii remote in unique ways, the baseball bat for example allows you to shake the Remote to increase a meter to ensure your next hit will be out of the park.

The targeting scope will revert back to the more tradition control scheme. Using the nunchuck analogue stick you can move your viewpoint and zoom in and out using the Z and C buttons respectively. The D-Pad will act as hot-keys, allowing you to interchange 4 weapons at any given time.

To be quite honest this port of the Xbox 360 classic really is not offering me enough to go out and buy this. Adding in the ability to shoot zombies and waggle the Wiimote to get them off of you is nice, but just isn’t enough. Then factor when you take into account the fact that you will have a fraction of the zombies on screen than the previous version and you lost me all together.

Fable 2 Gets Release Date

Fable II Collectors Edition

We finally get a travel date back to the land of Albion. October 21, mark it dude. The much anticipated sequel, Fable 2 comes to us just before Halloween and after almost a year of waiting. This is supposed to be the definitive action RPG of this generation and developer Peter Molyneux has not let us forget it. We’ll find out this October.

Want to Punch Kim Kardashian in the Face?

Kim K
Well now is your chance. Looks like Kim K. is lending her likeness to EA and their new Facebreaker game along with Peter Moore. Kim is a playable in game character and helps promote the new “Photo Game Face” mode that lets players use their camera to import their faces into Facebreaker although I am very skeptical as to how well it will work since the face scans using the camera Tiger Woods were horrible.

Facebreaker is scheduled to drop for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 on September 5. So get your pimp hand ready for Kim K. and no you can’t hit her with anything else in the face, shame on your for thinking it.

Hit the jump to see what she will look like in game.
