Review: Spore (PC)

Spore is the brainchild of Will Wright and EA. The team over at Maxis has spent a long time developing this genre-crossing title and has tried to polish it into a gem. Spore does many things right, the graphics, the sounds and the interface, but unfortunately does have some drawbacks, like length of play and multiplayer aspects.

Spore is broken up into 5 different portions: Cell phase, Creature phase, Tribal phase, Civilization phase and Space phase. Each phase puts your creature into a different time frame in the evolution of their existence and provides different gaming aspects for you to succeed. Probably the most fun and addictive portions of the game are the first two phases, Cell and Creature, because you are getting used to the game and the interface and really are shaping your creatures.

Spore Coming This September

Spore Screen

EA dropped a press release today dating Spore worldwide for the weekend of September 7th, 2008. The game will be available for PC, Mac, Nintendo DS, and Mobile Phones.

“The wait is almost over,” said Maxis Chief Designer Will Wright. “We’re in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can’t wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year.”

I’m not too sure how the game will play out on mobile phones. Spore seems a bit too deep and complex for the platform. Either way, I can’t wait to get my hands on the final game this fall on my MacBook Pro.

Spore Coming to Mac

Spore Screen

Mac gamers rejoice. Spore is coming your way. EA announced that Will Wright’s new creature-creating game, Spore, will see the light of day on Mac later this year.

“We couldn’t be happier to bring Spore to the Mac at the same time as the PC version. Spore is a highly creative game and I look forward to seeing what the players come up with to fill the universe they design,” said Will Wright, Chief Designer of Spore.

Since I will be switching to Mac later this year, this is exciting for me. With Mac gaining a lot of market share, I would expect to see more and more games making the jump.

Will Wright, of Sims and Spore fame, will become the first recipient of the Fellowship from the video games industry at the British Academy Video Games Awards 2007. The Fellowship is the highest accolade the Academy can bestow on an individual for their creative work.

Hilary Bevan Jones, Chairman of the Academy said “Will’s immense, creative body of work and his continued contribution to the industry make him a most worthy recipient of the Fellowship and being such a pioneer, we are thrilled that he will be the first person to receive this honour”.

There’s no disputing Will Wright’s influence on the gaming world. Everyone here at Loot Ninja would like to extend our congratulations. Hopefully Will isn’t the last of our field to make it into BAFTA.
