I miss those games. You know, like Time Crisis, Area 51, Virtua-Cop, and the Silent Scope series. I’d think with all the motion controls on the Wii, or the PS3, we’d see a few more games like that. Sure I can walk down to my local arcade, and MAYBE find a few of those good old games, but I don’t like walking, or carrying change in my pockets, so…
I know it’s not really a big portion of the video game market, but there is just something about holding that light gun and seeing the brains splatter. I even remember playing Virtua Cop 5 for HOURS, trying to beat the game with all crotch shots. Heck, I’d have bought a Wii just to play those games again.
Anyone else miss those? Come on, I know you do…

Over the past couple weeks, I have begun to lose some slight respect for Sony and have since gained respect for Nintendo and the Wii. As we all know by now, Kaz Hirai bashed Microsoft, and sincerely bashed the Wii stating, “It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don’t look at their console as being competitors.” I don’t care what kind of esoteric meaning or different ways you can read into this statement because it’s ridiculous. Last time I checked, the Wii sold more systems that both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 combined and the DS outsells the PSP. Business has nothing to do with who has the best product, because we can say all we want that the Wii isn’t the best system on the market but it sells head and shoulders above its competition. How can a company whose sole purpose is to sell video games, consoles, and handhelds, not be considered competitors to companies who also are in the market to sell video games, handhelds and consoles?

After careful deliberation with myself, I have rescinded my original animosity toward Microsoft for the things they have done over the past week; deciding that Blu-Ray is unimportant, and that they are in no rush for the next generation Xbox. Originally I thought it stupid of them to state, or even think, both of these things. However, with second sight, and my breath back from screaming so loudly at them, I decided that maybe I was a bit harsh and abrupt.

Is it just me or do the majority of movies based on video games, and video games based on movies, suck? Why is this? Honestly I don’t have a good answer other than sheer laziness. The “milking it” factor. The “it doesn’t matter as long as the previews look good to boost sales” motto – disgusting. Max Payne, the movie based on the video game, was horrible (in my opinion), and made a ton of money off of the sheer idea that it’s Max Payne in movie form. Now we’ve seen sci-fi type, action packed, adventure movies actually work in the past – The Dark Knight, 300, The Matrix (only the original; here is another example of laziness, but that’s not my quarrel now) – but I have yet to see a video game conquer the big screen with any dignity. And the biggest issue I have with this is that there are plenty of great video games than can be made into great movies.

There is a lot of “fanboy” hate in the gaming community and I really don’t understand why. What’s wrong with a “fanboy,” and why do people hate them so much? It’s really interesting if you think about other companies outside of the gaming world; they too have what the gaming community conceives as “fanboys.”
There are “fanboys” for every system out there. From the original Nintendo, Sega, and Playstation, to PC gaming, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, and Wii; they all have groups of “fanboys.” There are people out there who love their Wii, they wouldn’t give it up for anything, and these Wii “fanboy’s” will bash anyone who claims the Wii is useless and utterly dismal. The same is true of any system in the market today. Is this a bad thing? No, I don’t believe so. Unless, however, one’s love for a certain system makes them bash other systems irrationally; and this happens all too often. I hate when an excuse to disprove somebody’s idea is simply, “well they are a ‘fanboy’.” It’s such an invalid argument it enrages me; so maybe there should be “fanboy” hate.

Doctors, Lawyers, Politicians, parents–people in power–will have all you gamers believe that video games at a young age leads to obesity. Some of these same people will go further and say that watching Television also causes obesity, and that both cause behavioral issues. I’m here to finally place the blame where blame should really be placed. There is no doubt that the majority of video games are not helping gamers get in shape. Although the Wii with Wii Fit is a step in the right direction on that front. However, I do believe that it is not up to a company that sells a product to force feed its members healthy alternatives.
Where does the problem lay? It’s the parents fault which evolves into the teenagers fault when he/she has the ability to decide things for themselves. You can give me thousands of studies showing me that sitting on a couch playing video games causes obesity (because it will), and I’ll show you a thousand different reasons that good (well lets change that to certain) parents raise thin kids. (I’m not really going to show a thousand different ones because I made that number up.)

With the election over, we now continue to move forward. However, where exactly is forward? If you’re stuck in the forest how do you decide which way to go? Well, we are all stuck in this metaphorical forest, and the new government will soon tell us where we are headed. Now, I’m not interested in the political or world views of this new government, its economic or foreign policy, etc. No, what I am interested in discussing is where will video games be headed in the near future; the future of this new government.
The world of video games has always had two, if not more, sides. This new government will likely fall onto a new side of their own. The biggest issue I have, and this is as far as I will go into politics, is that this new government, all three branches, are entirely Democratic. The point of this sentence does not rest on the word Democratic, but the word “entirely”. It wouldn’t matter if the entire government were all Republican, my ideas would still be relayed the same way. This is because there will no longer be the system of checks and balances within the government to prevent laws that are unjust, unfounded, or unnecessary to large majority of people; and in this instance I’m referring to gamers exclusively. Now, what this really means is that, if this new government decides on some level to begin to regulate video games, the video game industry will not be able to fight back. President Elect Obama has stated that there is “a role for the federal government to play [in video games]. We need to understand the impact of these new media better.” My opinion on the entire situation is that the government should not be involved at all in regulating video games. (I also will go further to say that the gaming companies should not regulate video games). I’m am all for freedom of speech, freedom of ideas, and pro warning labels and ratings on video games.
