How We Kick It Old School

Rock Em Sock Em Robots

I was at a Christmas party with friends this weekend and we did one of those Yankee Swap deals. Our limit was $10, and everyone got some pretty amusing gifts. I think what I ended up with was definitely the winner though. Yeah, you guessed it from the image above… I got Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. HELL YEAH. This is how we gamed in the dark ages people.

After a couple hours of drunken Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em tournaments, I ended up on top as the champion. I have some torn up knuckles to prove it. The game is definitely not meant for big adult hands. I’m gonna have to come up with some extension for the handles so I don’t cut up my hands again. Oh well, it was all in the name of classic gaming fun.

Vacations, Weddings, and Family Emergencies

street-team.JPG

You may have noticed I’ve been a little absent the past two days here. If you haven’t heard, I’m getting married this Sunday. So that’s taking up a good bit of my time. I also had a fairly large family emergency occur yesterday, so I’m trying to deal with that as well.

After my wedding, I’ll be on my honeymoon for a little over a week, so you won’t hear from me (save my review of Socom – Tactical Strike for the PSP which is under embargo until when I’m gone… fear not, someone will get that review up).

This weekend might be a bit slower than usual as most of the Loot Ninja will be descending upon upstate New York for my wedding. So please bear with us, we’ll be back to normal in a few days.

That’s it for me. I’ll talk to you all again as a married man.

Digital Life – How I Saw It

Digital Life ImageMyself and fierce Scuba went around Digital Life this past weekend and got to check out all the new stuff out there. He brought you his visions, now here’s how it went down from my eyes.

  • Newegg had a pretty cool booth setup with gaming rigs all around. All consoles and PC were hooked to 40″ LCD HDTVs. The Xbox 360 Elite was running DiRT, the PC was running GRAW2 with a sweet PhsyX card in it, and the PS3 was running Heavenly Sword. However, the PS3 was hooked up with standard RCA cables and running in 480i. What kind of crap is that?
  • Intel had some amazing gaming PCs setup running Quake 4 with a local multiplayer match setup. The games were running with at least 100fps during the games and looked amazing.
  • RedOctane had a sweet booth with multiple Xbox 360 stations with Guitar Hero 3 demos. There were only 6 tracks available, and every station had the wired GH2 guitars. No new GH3 style guitars were to be found.
  • There was a nice Gaming Arcade area setup with over 10 each Xbox 360 and PS3 running multiple games. Obviously the Halo 3 stations were mobbed all day.
  • Toshiba had their new gaming laptops setup in their booth running Gears of War and BioShock. They had a tournament running every hour on Gears of War.
  • Microsoft had a large booth showing off Windows Vista (not many people were in that part) and Games for Windows. They had Crysis, Hellgate: London, Gears of War and BioShock all running on pimped out Alienware machines. Crysis blew them all out of the water in terms of visuals.

We also sat down with some of the development team at Turbine who work on Lord of the Rings Online. I’ll have more information on that later today. Stay tuned.

Weekend Highlights from Digital Life

Digital Life ImageThis weekend, drunk pandas and I attended the Digital Life consumer electronics show in New York City on Saturday. Here is a quick recap of what went on and some of the cool things that are coming out.

  • We arrive and are greeted by the VS Energy Drink crew outside and they forced lukewarm energy drink down our throats. Something about warm, grape flavored soda at 10 am is not delicious.
  • There is a line of no less than 500 people waiting to get in and countless more paying the entrance fee. We are able to don our press passes and sneak through some fire exits and make it in ahead of everyone else. Ninjas indeed.
  • drunk pandas and I make our way to the Guitar Hero III expo booth and pandas rocks out a high score on Pearl Jam’s Evenflow. High fives abound. Expect a GH3 giveaway from us coming soon. Red Octane guys were cool as shit.
  • Next up was our America’s Army Virtual Soldier Experience. We have to register our names and address, so we will be getting recruiting swag in no time. The exhibit was bad ass. We sat on the edge of a Hummer in front of a large screen and got to fire real size M249-SAW replicas at the screen against some Iraqi terrorists in a rescue mission. The simulation was awesome, but this was a motivated booth. You can call it propaganda or recruiting depending on your point of view, but it was still fun nonetheless.
  • We visited the Lord of the Rings: Shadows of Angmar booth to get a good look at their upcoming game. Needless to say, we were both very impressed. Expect more on this very soon.
  • We met with the EA games designers from Crysis. The game looked awesome, but to run this game, your PC needs to be a monster. DX 10 card will cost you about 500 bucks. I asked if and when they would port it to the 360., no comment.

There is much more to discuss and expect some new giveaways and some contests as a result. We made some awesome contacts and we will have much more that will benefit our readers as well as some exclusive interviews as well as some site changes.

Loot Ninja To Attend DigitalLife This Saturday in NYC

Digital Life ImageYour friends at Loot Ninja, namely drunk pandas and myself, have been awarded exclusive press passes to the gaming and technology in Manhattan, NYC this weekend. The conference will run from Thursday Sept 27 until Sunday the 30th. We will be there all day Saturday.

Here is the link for the conference in case any of you want to to attend though its 12 bucks for non press members. Look for the half drunk guys clad in Loot Ninja gear making a scene somewhere.

Weekend Recap

Atlantic City Picture

The Loot Ninja crew was in Atlantic City this weekend for some debauchery and good times. As a recap, here’s what went down:

  • Two editors were chased by no less than 8 security guards through the casino
  • One editor has welts all over his ass
  • One editor slept in the fetal position and tried to use the curtains as a blanket
  • The rules for the champagne room were broken
  • One editor has a $200 “miscellaneous” charge on his Amex
  • Many other things that can’t be discussed here, but produced a lot of good times

We’re all back now, but we’re a little tired. Personally I spent a little over 14 hours in the car this weekend and didn’t get much sleep. Today might be a little slower than normal, so bear with us :)

This Weekend’s Activities

Atlantic City Picture

You might notice that this weekend’s stories will be a little light compared to previous weekends. That’s because the entire Loot Ninja crew will be descending upon Atlantic City today for the bachelor party of yours truly.

We’ve got a lot of content stored and ready to go and will get it out there to you as soon as we can (thank God for the iPhone). I’m sure there’s going to be some good stories come Monday morning, mostly involving me being humiliated in some way. Buy hey, at least I get to play some Craps and Blackjack.
