Top 5 Most Guilt-Inducing Videogames

Lore Sjoberg from Wired discusses the top 5 most guilt inducing videogames, which are: Lemmings, Animal Crossings, Sims, Nintendogs and World of Warcraft in his opinion. Listen as he discusses how these games spark guilt on the gamer and of course WoW has the ability to cause guilt even when your not playing.

What game would you add to this list? Perhaps Spore (for making penis monsters) or Barbies Horse Adventure (for making you a scary individual)?

WoW: It Pulled Me Back In

I was out of the World of Warcraft loop for a while and then one day Matt convinced me to pick up the Burning Crusade expansion and dust off my dormant level 60 character. Man was I in for it, I grinded close to 70 and was almost done with my WoW fix until the latest expansion just released, Wrath of the Lich King has officially pulled me back in.

This commercial about sums up my feelings, Silvio from the Sopranos quoting The Godfather “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” Damn it, I’m in! And without Matt might I add, he departed from WoW at about level 7 and left me now to change realms with my main and start my quest to level 80. Yes a paid character transfer will take place and send me to Korgath where I will join a raiding guild and get to work.

Hit the Jump for the Ozzy Osbourne spot and my initial impressions of Wrath of the Lich King.

WoW Gets Patch That Breaks Everything

We had brought you news about World of Warcraft being patched a few days ago and, for the most part, everyone involved was happy as a pig in slop, until they logged on. If you have not tried to log in after downloading the patch, then you are missing some interesting times in the world of Azeroth.

Once I downloaded the patch, my realm was not even found, so my characters were no where to be found either. It took Blizzard until the following day to figure out what was going on and the continually pushed back the times that all the realms were going to be up and functional. Even after the realms appeared, there have been quite a few shenanigans occurring:

  • I have had horrible lag that renders the game nonfunctional
  • I have looted a corpse and been stuck in that position until I log out
  • I have gotten stuck trying to log out of the game and had to force my computer to quit the application
  • My pet on my hunter has changed form, disappeared, and gotten stuck running around
  • My pet’s abilities turn themselves back on every so often, such as prowl, which I turn off, just decides to enable itself
  • Mounts have disappeared on players
  • Some players have their experience altered and actually lost points
  • One player was stuck swimming/breathing even after he got out of the water and watched as his breath never regenerated
  • NPC characters have left towns, which make repairing or selling your items or even cashing in quests impossible
  • Ogrimar is consistently dead

So far, it has been one big headache.

A lot of gamers have been ranting and raving about what is going on, but the unfortunate part is that many players have accepted the fact that patches from Blizzard typically are buggy and cause more harm than good for the first few weeks. I can not condone this. Blizzard makes great games but stink at patches? Why can’t they get this right ahead of time?

I am on the Arthas server in case anyone wants to see what I am talking about. Have you had some whacky stuff happen to you?

Peter Molyneux Hates Puppies

Here goes the logic:

Peter M. creates a new Fable II and adds in a companion dog
Fans rejoice!
Peter M. gets feedback from gamer that he finds hurting his virtual dog funny
Peter finds this fantastic

“The other bloke standing next to him said, ‘Ah, you’re such a wimp. I just left my dog and he was hurt and he had to crawl around and I found it funny. It just made me laughed he was so injured all of the time.’”

“That was a fantastic moment for me because I realized that’s what I wanted. Some people are going to be fanatical about the dog, but I didn’t want to ram him down your throat. I didn’t want to insist that you had him.”

Why did Peter Molyneux bother putting the dog into the game if he doesn’t want it to be a pivotal part of the game? The only reason I and many other gamers want to pick up Fable II is because of the ability to use the dog to battle and find loot. To me the dog is what sets this apart from the first iteration of Fable on the Xbox, I guess I fall into the category of those people that will be fanatical about it.

Never Ending Video Games

Never ending video games

Many people have been or are currently hooked on the ever popular and growing genre of games we call Massively Multiplayer Online games, MMO for short. Many argue that the charm of an MMO is the ability to have an expansive experience that changes and never really ends, but there are some that argue the opposite and see a lot of satisfaction in a game that has a clear cut ending. Let the debate begin…

StarCraft Retrospective

Starcraft

With the announcements of StarCraft 2, it got me reminiscing of the good old days of the original StarCraft. The game was developed by our good friends over at Blizzard and is perhaps one of the best real time strategy games ever made and definitely paved the way for many more strategy games like it. StarCraft first came onto the video game scene in March of 1998 for Windows and then a year later for Mac (back then Mac got no love). The story of StarCraft revolves around three main races: the Protoss, the Zerg and the Terrans. Each of the three races was fighting for dominance of the universe and would stop at nothing to achieve this.

The events of StarCraft unfold in the 25th century where certain humans have been exiled, because of overpopulation during the 21st century, into space and encounter the Zerg and the Protoss. The Terrans were the exiled humans with their Earth technology to aid them in battle, such as tanks, jets, floating buildings and the ever popular marines. The Zerg were an alien race that was part insect and part bad ass. They would spawn their armies from cocoons and could even infect the other races to use them against themselves. The Protoss were the alien race with superior intellect that was a cross between the noble samurai and the cut throat ninja, using their psychic powers to destroy their enemies.

Blizzard tops Amazon charts

Diablo 2 Battle Chest
So you have probably heard by now about all the Blizzard announcement’s, yes Diablo III is coming and now the waiting game begins. I was curious and decided to look into picking up a couple of the Battle Chests and saw that the Diablo Battle Chest is at #1 on the Amazon list.

Not only is the Diablo Battle Chest on top of the Amazon Bestsellers in Video Games chart, but of the top 15 Amazon titles there are 6 Blizzard titles! The StarCraft Battle Chest, Warcraft III Battle Chest and the WoW Battle Chest are also up there. Looks like the news of the new Diablo III and StarCraft II games are pushing the sales of the predecessors, good news for Blizzard even if it does take them ten years to actually release the new games.

I think I am going to dig up my copy of Diablo and give it a go now.

Toyota uses WoW in it’s commercials

In the latest Toyota Tacoma commercial you can see some World of Warcraft characters jump into a pick up and take on a dragon - priceless. Pretty impressive how video games continue to become more mainstream and pop up in every day places now like South Park and commercials. Kudos to WoW for pushing the boundaries.

South Park Warcraft Episode Wins Emmy

South Park Warcraft

In what could be one of the greatest South Park Episodes ever, “Make Love, Not Warcraft” won the Animated Program Primetime Emmy Award (for Programming Less Than One Hour).

In “Make Love, Not Warcraft”, Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny come into contact with a gamer who doesn’t play by the rules. Even the executives of Blizzard Entertainment don’t know how to stop the renegade and are forced to put all of their hope into the hands of the kids of South Park. The boys dedicate their lives to defeating the mad gamer and saving the game for all.

If you haven’t seen this episode, go find it somewhere because it’s hilarious. I can’t believe they gave an Emmy to a show that features Cartman shitting all over his mom (literally). Too funny.

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Video

So if you play World of Warcraft and you thought that the new level cap of 70 was a pain, here is the trailer for the new expansion for WoW, Wrath of the Lich King, and it will provide you with a brand new level 80 cap. You can also expect a new class, Dark Knight (think Necromancer from Diablo), siege weapons, a new crafting skill and more quests. Enjoy the add-ons and say goodebye to reality once again.
