Video Games – The 7th Level of Consciousness?

a_karmapa_0609

Ogyen Trinley Dorje – The Karmapa Lama, and only senior Buddhist leader recognized by China, Tibet, and India – was recently interviewed during a visit to Delhi, India. There he revealed his penchant for video games.

Well, I view video games as something of an emotional therapy, a mundane level of emotional therapy for me. We all have emotions whether we’re Buddhist practitioners or not, all of us have emotions, happy emotions, sad emotions, displeased emotions and we need to figure out a way to deal with them when they arise. So, for me sometimes it can be a relief, a kind of decompression to just play some video games.

If I’m having some negative thoughts or negative feelings, video games are one way in which I can release that energy in the context of the illusion of the game. I feel better afterwards. The aggression that comes out in the video game satiates whatever desire I might have to express that feeling. For me, that’s very skilful because when I do that I don’t have to go and hit anyone over the head.

That’s pretty freakin’ sweet. The Karmapa Lama plays video games, and loves mindless violence and killing. While obviously not your average 24 year old male, Trinley seems pretty cool.

So, all you out-of-touch old hacks/geezers that claim video games cause all kinds of emotional turmoil and violence, can officially SUCK IT, courtesy of the Karmapa Lama. Because PWNING nOObs is good for you.

I wonder if he’s on Facebook? Maybe we could invite him to our Community Playdate for Modern Warfare 2 on November 15th?

Best Buy: Buy 1 360 Game, Get 1 50% Off

Best Buy Store

Budget minded gamers like me are constantly looking for video game deals left and right.  I have been subscribed to a few RSS feeds for quite some time now and I shop for everything from dorky/offensive t-shirts to geek gear and dragon dildoes.  Through the Slick Deals RSS feed, I came across a great offer from Best Buy.com.  Right now if you head on over to Best Buy online you will be able to get any 360 game of your choice for the online price (it can be any price mind you), and you’ll get the second one of equal or lesser value for 50% off.

Not only is that a great deal, it also works on pre-orders too.  I myself just bought Batman: Arkham Asylum (which I was going to get anyway) and I pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2 for $30 dollars.  Tax is added on after you enter your zip code, but shipping is free, so that puts the icing on the cake for me.

I only mention this because I feel like this is a great deal for my fellow Loot Ninja gamers, and want to spread the wealth, because I love you.  I really really do.  If you are looking to buy a few games around this slow time anyway, now might be the time to do so for a great price.  You can tinker around with the shipping or pick-up option in store and it could save you a few extra dollars, but then you will have to deal with people.  I don’t like to deal with people, so I chose the “ship to my front door” option.  I can do that in my red hearted thong underwear if I want to.  Best Buy apparently frowns on that attire in the store.

There is no telling how long this deal will last, so get on out there and get to buyin’!

What the Eff… is up with Video Games and Movies?

Is it just me or do the majority of movies based on video games, and video games based on movies, suck?  Why is this?  Honestly I don’t have a good answer other than sheer laziness.  The “milking it” factor.  The “it doesn’t matter as long as the previews look good to boost sales” motto – disgusting.  Max Payne, the movie based on the video game, was horrible (in my opinion), and made a ton of money off of the sheer idea that it’s Max Payne in movie form.  Now we’ve seen sci-fi type, action packed, adventure movies actually work in the past – The Dark Knight, 300, The Matrix (only the original; here is another example of laziness, but that’s not my quarrel now) – but I have yet to see a video game conquer the big screen with any dignity.  And the biggest issue I have with this is that there are plenty of great video games than can be made into great movies.

Gamers are Addicts… Not

“Ninety per cent of the young people who seek treatment for compulsive computer gaming are not addicted.”

To say that people can become addicted to video games is absolutely ludicrous.  This article brought to us by the BBC states that there are kids out there being treated for addiction to video games such as World of Warcraft.

“But Mr. Bakker believes that this kind of cross-addiction affects only 10% of gamers. For the other 90% who may spend four hours a day or more playing games such as World of Warcraft, he no longer thinks addiction counseling is the way to treat these people.
“These kids come in showing some kind of symptoms that are similar to other addictions and chemical dependencies,” he says.
“But the more we work with these kids the less I believe we can call this addiction. What many of these kids need is their parents and their school teachers – this is a social problem.”

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again— we have to blame the parents.  Video games are a large part of our society today and to make excuses for children and adolescents’ stupidity in playing video games too much is ridiculous.  It’s a parent’s obligation to teach their children responsibility; responsibility involves spending too much time playing video games.  When parents are unable to regulate what their children do, how their children act, then they are failures.  It’s completely unfortunate the amount of horrendous parents there are in the world.
