We have had a few days to think about what exactly went on at the video gaming industry’s biggest awards ceremony on Saturday. A slew of celebrities (and wanna-be celebrities) came out in droves to pay respects to this year’s best games. I set my DVR to record the VGA’s on Spike this year (as I do with all of my TV shows) and watched it late Sunday afternoon. I’m glad I did just that, because there were a few things I saw that I’m glad I was able to fast forward through. Hit the jump to find out what exactly those moments were.
Holy Shit Batman. Not many of us saw this coming. Batman:Arkham Asylum was the best game made to date about the caped crusader. Lucky for us, the guys over at Rocksteady are planning on giving us another turn as the Dark Knight, but this time it appears everyone got loose. I am hoping for a more open world, less linear adventure this time as we will not be confined to rooms and hallways, but i have zero doubt that this game is not going to kick serious ass.
This is what a lot of us have been waiting for. Some say Halo 3 was just a spiffed u version of Halo 2. Others will say that ODST was just a money grubbing expansion from Microsoft. Well, Halo:Reach is coming. This is the first in-game footage anyone has seen. There is no actual fighting, but from the looks of in FMV, which appear to be actual game footage, not movie clips, the detail pops. Pops. Watch all the way to the end. Spartans vs Elites = WIN.
GameTrailers and Spike TV unveiled another teaser for game to be revealed at the VGA’s this weekend. This time, I’m positive I know what the game is, but I want to see you all guess in the comments. I’ll give you a hint: it’s not Modern Warfare 3.
I think I have a bit of an idea on what this game is, but I’m going to keep it to myself to see what everyone guesses. It looks like it could be badass, but it depends on actual gameplay. What do you think?
Star Wars holds a special place in my heart. Not just because I had to endure being shoved in school lockers most of my early life due to the fondness I have for the franchise, but because I’ve probably watched the movies and played the games thousands of times over.
If the prospect of a new Star Wars game gets your midichlorians in motion, then you’ll probably want to watch Spike’s VGA show this year, where LucasArts is said to be unveiling a new game. We’ll have to wait for the show to find out what the game itself is, but until then we’ll just have to speculate. A new Jedi Knight game? Battlefront 3? Maybe a brand new, adult focused Star Wars game in the vein of Batman: Arkham Asylum (hey, I can dream, can’t I?) The VGAs will air on December 12th, at 8PM Eastern time, so set your DVRs accordingly.
The Terminator movies changed a genre and can be considered groundbreaking. T3 was kind of ass, but the TX was hot as hell. Now, after the success of the TV show, Terminator: Salvation aims to move the franchise to new places by expanding the story beyond into the end of mankind. Check out this teaser trailer from the VGA’s. Christian Bale as John Connor FTMFW.
Just a reminder to set your DVR for 9pm ET tonight for Spike TV for this year’s Video Game Awards. Should be much better than last year.
The biggest part is the new trailers and reveals for a bunch of new quality titles, like Uncharted 2, GTA IV The Lost and the Damned, and a few others.
The new Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard Update fixed some glaring issues with both VGA and the Wireless Network Adapter.
On the VGA front, you can now select the video Reference Levels in the System Blade. This will allow you to change the output frequency to match your TV’s frequency. No more washed out colors of soft pictures with this fix.
For the Wireless Networking Adapter, you can now connect to a wireless network that is using WPA + WPA2 encryption. This was an issue from day 1 with the adapter. Even though you were allowing a WPA client to connect to your router with both encryptions in place, the official Xbox 360 adapter didn’t want to play nice. Now it does. The official wireless networking adapter still does not support WPA2, but it allows you to connect in the presence of this encryption standard. So for all of you other there using a Draft-N router, you can now connect your Xbox 360 to it with wireless LAN.
Kudos to Microsoft to implementing these fixes. They’re long overdue, but greatly welcome.
Everyone’s favorite gaming retailer, Gamestop/EB Games, will be offering a trade-up program for the Xbox 360 Elite. You get trade-in credit for an Xbox 360 Core or Premium as well as an original Xbox.
For the Core 360, you get $200 trade-in credit. For the Premium, you get $250. You’d think all the extra premium stuff would be worth more than an extra $50. Anyway, you will also get $50 for trading in your original Xbox. Personally, I’d say keep that original Xbox and mod it to run Xbox Media Center.
If you’re looking to get rid of your current 360 for the new, more powerful model, this isn’t too bad of a deal. I’m going to wait it out and see if Microsoft fixes the VGA output issues on the 360.
