Remember how Unreal Tournament III on Xbox 360 is set to have some exclusive Gears of War 2 content? Well, we got our grubby little hands on it early of the game’s release. It’s a video (shocker) with some cool behind the scenes talk about gameplay, character count on screen, multiplayer modes, weapons, and more. Check it out.
Epic is pushing out a huge update for Unreal Tournament 3 on the PS3. The update will come March 27th for both the US and Europe. Most notably, the US and EU versions will be brought up to speed so you can play each other across the pond.
Other fixes include making it easier to import mods, bug fixes, keyboard support fixes, and a ton of other stuff. The list is huge, so check it out after the jump. And make sure to fire up your copy of UT3 on March 27th to get all the new goodies.
There’s still issues with getting mods for the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3. In an interview with Joystiq at GDC, Mark Rein said absolutely no progress has been made on the Xbox 360 front. In fact, the game still has no release date on the platform.
Mark Rein also acknowledged the fact that getting mods onto the PS3 isn’t the best process and that we’d see improvements soon. Hopefully that includes being able to download them directly from the PS3 easily.
The great modder Zubren has done the unthinkable. Well, I’m sure a lot of us thought of it, but none of us had the skills to actually do it. Zubren recreated the Halo map Wizard in Unreal Tournament 3.
This is a remake of the Halo map named Wizard. This was a great close quarters map and I felt it would be right at home with Unreal Tournament 3. This also has full bot pathing so you can play singleplayer without having to find a server with someone hosting this map.
The modding community around UT3 is exploding rapidly with some great content. This one is available for both the PC and PS3, so get downloading.
Now that the mod tools have been released for the Unreal Editor 3, we’ve got our first user cooked PS3 mod. And it’s a damn good one at that. The mod is called Action Cam v1.0. This mutator allows you to play UT3 with an over the shoulder view, similar to Gears of War. How cool is that?
Enter the battle with an over the shoulder camera and see the Action from an all new perspective! Action Cam is designed to offer better visibility, depth, and feedback to the player than the normal first person view, and offers pixel-perfect accuracy.
There’s a few issues right now, which will be addressed in an update to the mutator from Fall, the author. Check the Epic Forums for the download link and get the update when it’s available. Great job, Fall! Keep it up!
We just received word from Epic that the much anticipated update for the Unreal Editor 3 to allow PS3 mod cooking has been OFFICIALLY released.
A link was going around the internet earlier for the closed beta, but we’re pleased to announce the full official release from Epic. If you have the PC version on Unreal Tournament 3, grab the update and start cooking mods for the PS3
[Update] For some reason the mod tools download link was taken down from that page. You can grab it here.
Well, it looks like Epic has worked out all the legal issues with Sony surround the update for the Unreal Editor 3. Mark Rein announced that the update, which allows users to cook their own PS3 mods for Unreal Tournament 3, is in the final stages of internal testing and should be released next week, if everything goes to plan.
We’re very close to releasing an update to the Unreal Engine 3 editor, that comes with the PC version of UT3, that will allow UT3 mod-makers to cook their mods into the required PS3 format. We’ve been doing some internal testing and we’re hoping to expand to a wider group tomorrow or Friday. If all goes well then we should see the update released next week which is what I expect will happen. Obviously the process works, as we put out a few mods before Christmas and people seem to be playing them, but it is the update to the editor that we’re testing.
This is great news for PS3 gamers who are looking to get some more mod action going on their copy of Unreal Tournament 3. I know the mods already released are terrific, and I only hope the community continues to grow.
Yeah, I didn’t want to say ass in the title. Sue me. I’m sure you’ve seen Tycho over at Penny Arcade rant on the modding in the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3. Basically, he thinks it’s crap that you need a USB flash drive (or other memory card type) to copy the mods from your PC to the PS3. Personally, I could care less about this. Who doesn’t own a PC and some sort of memory card these days? It’s not that big a step. It’s not completely necessary either. If you try to play online with someone using a mod, it will be automatically downloaded to your machine.
What bugs me is that you need to copy one mod at a time via your USB drive. So in my case right now, I had to make 5 trips from my computer to my PS3, loading one mod each time, then starting over. There is only one file that is used on the USB key to transfer the mods and that file can only contain one mod at a time. I think Epic REALLY needs to come up with a better way of doing this. Yes, we all love mods. Yes, we love user created content. Yes, we know it’s a totally new concept to console gaming. But we need a much more streamlined way of getting them. Direct downloads from the PS3’s Internet Browser would be ideal, but allowing multiple mods to be copied over at once on a USB drive would work perfectly as well. And with the Unreal Editor update coming very soon, the amount of mods available on the PS3 is going to increase exponentially. Imagine wanting 25 mods, but needing to make 25 trips with your USB key. I think I’ll pass.
This has nothing to do with the PS3 being good or bad, so it shouldn’t turn into a flame fest. This is Epic’s implementation of mods for the game on PS3. It’s the first time it’s been done, so there are growing pains involved. Just pointing out some optimizations that need to happen sooner rather than later for mods to become more mainstream on consoles.
Since users can’t create their own PS3 mods yet for Unreal Tournament 3, Epic decided to cook up a few themselves. Right now, there’s some legal issues involved with adding some code to the Unreal Editor to allow cooking of PS3 mods. As soon as that’s worked out, the update for the Unreal Editor will be released. It’s slightly annoying this all wasn’t worked out before the game was released.
Anyway, Mark Rein posted a couple links to some of the best mods so far for UT3 cooked up for the PS3. Extract them one at a time onto a USB key or however else you want to get them to your PS3. You can’t do multiple ones at a time, unfortunately. They all look pretty cool, and free maps is always a great thing. So check them out and see what you might be able to come up with yourself.
It seems that the killer aps for the PC are not moving as well as most people including developers had thought. The sales for Crysis, which is a gorgeous looking and phenomenal game with a 91 on metacritic has only sold 86,663 according to research group NPD. The reason for this? You need to have an insane amount of hardware just to run the game on its lowest settings. A dual core processor, 2gb of RAM, and a decent DX10 card might get you 30 fps. Not all that great considering your laptop is going to be well over $2000.
UT3, another awesome game with a very loyal following has only 33,995 units sold according to the same research group. The writing on the wall is clear. People no longer have to shell out tons of money for hardware that is going to be obselete in 6 months. The PS3 version will not even cost you 500 bucks for game and console. Could this be the end of PC gaming as we know it? Probably not, but consoles are making strides to complete overtake it.
