E309: Scenes From the Ubisoft Press Briefing

Ubisoft E309 Press Conference

Ubisoft’s press briefing was… interesting. More on that to follow, but first, it’s time to see how it all looked. The room was small and hot and the sound system was entirely too loud. If you’re press conference host needs to comment to that effect… yeah. Also, entirely too much reading from teleprompters.

ubisoft_logo

Ubisoft has announced that it will be adding two more Mac titles to its line-up this year, Prince of Persia and Shaun White Snowboarding.  Both games will be available through Ubisoft’s digital store, GameTree Online and at traditional retail locations in March 2009.

“The Mac community has responded very positively to our previous game offerings and we’re excited to provide Mac users with a new selection of games through our relationship with TransGaming,” said Andy Swanson, senior director of strategic sales and partnerships at Ubisoft.

TransGaming Inc. will be the developer porting the titles.

Mac versions of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Hard Evidence, Rayman Raving Rabbids and Petz Sports will also be released at select retail establishments for the first time in March 2009.

Mac gaming is still alive folks, get it while it’s hot.

Far Cry 2 Ships 1 Million Units Worldwide

Ubisoft has announced today that Far Cry 2, on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC has sold 1 million units worldwide.  They accomplished this feat in less than 3 weeks.  The sequel to the original hit takes place in an open world with highly detailed environments that allows the player to create their own experience.

“The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch of Far Cry 2,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “The game is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year.”

With the crowded new game market it’s surprising Far Cry 2 has sold this well.  It seems the franchise is here to stay.

New Content Coming to R6: Vegas 2

Rainbox Six Vegas 2 Fan Pack Screen

Some free stuff content is coming to Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. That’s right, I said the magic word: FREE. Ubisoft will be releasing the Fan Pack containing three new maps, further ranks to obtain past Elite, some gameplay balancing tweaks, and a new tactical-based gameplay mode called High Stakes.

If you aren’t playing R6: Vegas 2 online, you’re definitely missing out. It’s one of the best online shooters out there, right along with CoD4, Bad Company, and Halo 3. It definitely sticks out from the crowd with it’s unique gameplay modes, especially my favorite: Terrorist Hunt.

The Fan Pack is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 and PS3 in late July, so stay tuned as we get a firm release date from Ubisoft. Should be a good summer for gaming.

Tom Clancy’s EndWar: Ubidays 2008 Trailer

Apparently in 2020, we are all pretty much screwed. The world will be in shambles and the remaining superpowers will fight for whatever is left behind. The story is nothing new, but this is the first real RTS from Tom Clancy and Co. You can expect some awesome gameplay and great graphics. The RTS market is a tough one to get a read on.  Some people are hardcore but most don’t bother because the learning curve can be too high or just frustrating. I think EndWar will change all that.

Shaun White Snowboarding Will Use Wii Balance Board

Shaun White Snowboarding

Ubisoft is dropping a snowboarding game of their own for multiple platforms and Shaun White, better known as the Flying Tomato, will grace the cover. The coolest news about the game so far is that it will make use of the Wii Balance board.

If you have’t gotten some foot time with this peripheral, it will work perfectly with a snowboarding title. Maybe use the Wii remote for tricks and you’ll be golden. Could really push people over the edge to buying the title for the Wii.

Only time will tell if this gets implemented properly. We’ll keep you posted as the game is still early in the development cycle.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is Coming

An example of a fantastic game that never made it big at retail is Beyond Good & Evil. To satisfy the masses of gamers and critics who absolutely loved the game, Ubisoft has announced a sequel.

Here’s the debut teaser showing off Jade and Pey’j stuck in the desert. For those of you who don’t know, Pey’j is the pig. Word on the street is that this footage is in-engine for the game, which would be really cool. Somehow I doubt that, though. Anyway, check it out for yourself.

Haze Demo Impressions

Haze

The Haze demo went up on the European PlayStation Store today and I had a chance to play through it a few times. At first, the game feels a lot like Crysis. You’re in the middle of a very nice looking jungle in an enhanced suit taking out enemies. You go through a series of small of objectives (clear the area, move to point A, clear the area, move to point B, clear the area, move to point C, clear the area…). It gets a bit repetitive, but that’s how shooters are these days.

The graphics are fairly nice and the demo runs at a constant framerate with no noticeable slowdown no matter how many enemies you’re taking out. The one problem I have graphically is interacting with the environment. You’re in a huge lush forest and brushing by leaves and branches does nothing. In games like Crysis and Halo 3, when you’re in a jungle, these things move when you hit them. It’s a bit disappointing to see this type of thing neglected by developers still.

Haze Release Date is Finally Official

Haze

Haze has been on again, off again with it’s release dates for a while now. Ubisoft has finally let the cat out of the bag and confirmed that Haze will be released in North American on May 20th.

In addition, we’ll be getting a demo in early May to test out the game. I’m on the fence with this one still. It seems like it has a good storyline, but it could easily fall into the “just-another-FPS” category. I think the demo will set me over to one side or the other, but for now I’m going to reserve judgement.
