As a huge fan of the FPS genre, I will almost give any game a one time through to see if it has any place in the already crowded shooters market. Another WWII game did not exactly whet my appetite. Anyway, the only level you get to play is mostly a tutorial level. The controls are not that difficult, but they tell you how to open doors, climb ladders and so forth. You seem to be an iron worker on a steel building when the attack comes. You have to make you way down to the streets while encountering about 15 or so German soldiers. The weapons are typical to the genre. It appears the Germans have some enhanced technology, but the level is very short. Graphically, its better than decent, but more on the cartoon side. Overall, I did not expect to be knocked off of my feet and I certainly wasn’t. This game would have been fun about 4 years ago. Call of Duty 4 put WWII games to bed for good.
I’m sure there is a lot more fun to be had in the later levels, but the lasting impression I got was a bad one. At the very end, you board a truck of other resistors if you will, and speed away as buildings are falling and people are crushed in its debris. Hmm. For someone who lives about 10 minutes from where the World Trade Center used to be… a game that uses New York City as a backdrop with falling skyscrapers and people dying is a little off putting to say the least. Perhaps some different imagery would have been nice. Why can’t someone invade Boston?
