GameStop Hosting a Gears of War Tournament [Update]

GameStop Gears of War Event Flyer

GameStop wants to get you in the mood for Gears of War 2. They also want your money and pre-orders. To help with all of these needs, all of the company’s stores will be hosting Gears of War tournaments this Friday, July 25th at 9:30pm.

Along with the tournament, there will be prizes for winners (and some random ones thrown in) as well as a custom produced video by Epic Games showing off some new stuff in Gears of War 2. Since the game is rated M, you have to be 17 or older to attend the event, so have your ID ready.

I’ll be showing off some of my Gears skills at my local GameStop in Saratoga Springs. Anyone that wants to try and take me down, let me know in the comments. Will you be going to your local GameStop on Friday night to win some Gears prizes?

[Update] The flyer for the event has a coupon on the back where you can get an extra 30% in trade-in credit on games when you pre-order Gears of War 2. The promo is running from July 25th through July 27th, so get ready to pre-order this weekend.

How We Kick It Old School

Rock Em Sock Em Robots

I was at a Christmas party with friends this weekend and we did one of those Yankee Swap deals. Our limit was $10, and everyone got some pretty amusing gifts. I think what I ended up with was definitely the winner though. Yeah, you guessed it from the image above… I got Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. HELL YEAH. This is how we gamed in the dark ages people.

After a couple hours of drunken Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em tournaments, I ended up on top as the champion. I have some torn up knuckles to prove it. The game is definitely not meant for big adult hands. I’m gonna have to come up with some extension for the handles so I don’t cut up my hands again. Oh well, it was all in the name of classic gaming fun.

Call of Duty 4 Tournament Fires Up

cod4-1.jpg

Activision sent word of a new tournament in Call of Duty 4 that will be starting soon sponsored by the Global Gaming League.

The Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 4v4 Tournament will take place on both Xbox 360 and PS3, so players can choose either one to join (but not both). Each competition stars with a points-based ladder, where players challenge others in the ladder, play matches and report their scores to earn points. Gamers will start off with practice ladders running from now through Sunday, December 9 so that they can form teams and practice. On Monday, December 10 the ladders will be reset and the official competition will begin. The ladders close on January 13, 2008 and the top 64 players will move on to the final competition.

If you think you’re good enough, head on over to the Global Gaming League website for more information and to sign up.

Pay to Play Gaming Tournaments to Hit the UK

money1.jpgThat rhyme was not intentional by the way. Damn it. Anyway, yahoogames reports that the UK will start a service at the UK based website, tournament.com that allows players to pay a small entrance fee in order to win various amounts of money.  The entrance fees range from free for practice and $10 for buy in.  The only game that is available now is Counter Strike and Half Life 2.  The rationale behind this is simple:

“Gambling rewards a player based purely on luck, while Tournament.com is a service that rewards players based on their skill. They’re two very different models.”

We’re confident that [our anti-cheating software] is some of the best out there and we use a combination of different anti-cheating software developed by third parties in conjunction with our internally developed Tournament Anti-Cheat, also known as TAC.”To supplement our security, we also have admins who continuously monitor in-game play, making sure that everyone is playing fair.”

This seems to be the equivalent to the online poker craze that swept the nation a few years ago, although far more in depth.  I see the only flaw being this.  Sometimes luck is a good thing. There are no doubt some awesome players who will keep piling up the wins and laughing with your money.  I hope the ranking system will take this into account.
