Tiger Woods 08 (PS3) Impressions

Tiger Woods Screen

I got a copy of Tiger Woods 08 for the PS3 to play around with and I’m pleasantly surprised with the game. Sure, it’s another year without major improvements, but EA refined the title in ways to make it more fun.

The graphics aren’t much different than the 07 edition, other than addition of more courses and golfers. The biggest additions come in the Tiger Challenge and the swing mechanics. In the Tiger Challenge, you no longer just go from one golfer to another in match play. You now have to complete 6-8 mini challenges before facing off against one of the game’s major golfers. With each defeat of each major golfer, your skill potential will increase (usually 10%), which you need to train your golfer to get their stats to that level. Thankfully there is no cheat to buy on the PS3 to max the stats of your golfer. Who knows if and when that will change. A new addition to the swing is the ability to draw or fade the ball easily with the L1 and R1 buttons. This makes it easier than trying to aim properly and swing at an angle with the analog stick.

Tiger Woods 08 Photo Game Face Issues

Tiger Woods Screen

So I got a copy of Tiger Woods 08 for PS3 and have been playing around a bunch today (thanks to getting the flu). I tried to get my photo game face on, but there’s been some issues.

First off, I tried using my Xbox Live Vision camera plugged into the PS3. After the console sat and computed stuff for over 20 minutes, it spit out an image that looked like Sloth from The Goonies. Yeah, that didn’t work out too well.

So then I set out to get it working online. EA has some of the worst servers I’ve seen around, and it’s been pretty much down whenever I’ve tried to go on today to get it setup. If you try to upload a photo and it just sits there forever.

Anybody had any luck getting the Photo Game Face to work well and have some tips for for setting up the placement dots when using a USB Camera on the system?

EA Sports Selling Cheats Again

Tiger Woods Screen

Another year, same story. Today on the Xbox Live Marketplace you can buy yourself a cheat to max out your golfer’s stats in Tiger Woods 08. The price, 200 Microsoft Points ($2.50).

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Maxed Out Player (200 MS Points) – 8/31
Max out your original game face golfer’s skills. Save yourself the time of building up your golfer, and instantly set all skills to 110%!

Just like last year, I’m willing to bet this sells a bunch. Seriously, why as gamers do we let this stand? Everyone needs to speak up and tell EA that selling cheat codes isn’t going to fly.

Tiger Woods 08: PS3 vs. Xbox 360 (Demos)

Tiger Woods Screen

I’ve put in a lot of time with both the PS3 and Xbox 360 demos of Tiger Woods 08. My average score is 5 under for the 3 holes (I did get a 7 under once). Comparing the two, I personally would have to side with the Xbox 360 version.

The 360 version clearly looks better. I have both my PS3 and 360 hooked up with HDMI and to my 1080p DLP. The 360 version looks sharper with better colors. The PS3 version seemed a bit washed out with less defined lines and edges.

I personally prefer the PlayStation controller for my Tiger Woods gaming, because that’s what I’m most used to. However both controllers felt layed out properly and the controls were tight.

So if you’re debating, based on the demos, I’d say get the Xbox 360 version. EA has stated they don’t put much effort into the PS3 versions, which explains the graphical differences.

Tiger Woods 08 Demo Available for Xbox 360

Tiger Woods 08 Screen 1

Fire up your Xbox 360 if you want to see the minor changes to this year’s Tiger Woods 08 game. Since the first “next-gen” golf game came out, EA has put very little effort into making it better. The graphics haven’t changed much, and feature additions have been sparse.

I’m a huge golf fan, and love golf games. Hell, I play 3-4 times a week. But I don’t really plan on picking up Tiger Woods this year. It looks to be much of the same. Thanks EA for little to no innovation. You’re doing really well with those exclusive licenses.

The demo weighs in at 733MB and is available everywhere except Austria, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Mexico or New Zealand.

Tiger Woods 08 Face Importing Video

Tiger Woods 08 Image

In this year’s Tiger Woods game for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, you’ll be able to import pictures of yourself to make your own face in the game. You use the Xbox Live Vision Camera, PS3 EyeToy, or you can upload pictures of yourself to EA’s website.

It looks like EA has done a great job with this feature in Tiger Woods.

Check out the video after the jump, since Gamespot doens’t make it easy to disable auto-play on their videos.

Tiger Woods 08 Trailer

Want to sink a 40 foot putt at Pebble Beach? Here’s your chance. In Tiger Woods 08, play more of the same with some great golf action.

Supposedly this will revolutionize the golf game genre… we’re a bit skeptical. It looks much like the 07 version, with slightly upgraded graphics and better sound (when you hit a drive in Tiger Woods 07, it sounded like a graphite head club, which no one uses).

New Tiger Woods 08 Screens

Tiger Woods 08 Screen 1

EA posted some new screens today from the Xbox 360 version of Tiger Woods 08. The game is looking better than last year.

The lighting effects look great. I hear they’re really focusing on the gameplay this year since the development has shifted to EA Tiburon. I think it’ll pay off.
