DigitalLife Dead This Year

DigitalLife is a trade show that is put on by Ziff Davis Media at the New York Jacob Javitz Center, which typically included technology and video games, but seems to be cancelled for this year because of a bad economy. Vice President Paul O’Reilly said the following during an interview:

The poor economic conditions have created a very different and difficult dynamic for us this year, and we weren’t confident that we could present a show experience that was consistent with the successes of prior years.

I can say that as a previous attendee last year this show was dying, he goes on to say:

Hopefully, a bigger and stronger DigitalLife will return in 2009. We will make additional announcements about the future of the show when details are available.

I would love for his last statement to be true since this show is very accessible to everyone on the East coast and it would be great to have something that could rival E3 or CES on the East coast as well, but it seems like a big stretch especially after the news of this years cancellation.

Is This the Most Intuitive Game Ever?

The premise of the game is simple. Make the man walk out of the room by tipping the box that responds to a webcam. Am I making no sense? Watch this video and see what everyone is talking about.

3G iPhone… It’s Official!

3g iphone

That’s right, Steve Jobs just announced that the new 3G version of the iPhone will be hitting stores in July, July 11th to be exact. Looks like the new version of the iPhone will be a bit thicker and will definitely have 3G technology as well as capability to run 3rd party apps and games.

Apple claims its 3G speeds trounce the competition, with pageloads 36% faster than the N95 and Treo 750 — and of course it completely trounces the old EDGE data. Battery life isn’t getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers.

Not only is this version touting the new firmware 2.0 and all it’s goodies but also touting a lower price point. That’s right, all this and a bag of chips for $199. Also expect this version to launch everywhere at the same time; no more timed releases. Looks like Apple came through with a doozy at it’s WWDC, look for more info as it becomes available.

Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year. 8GB is available for $199, 16GB for $299 — and the 16GB comes in white. Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th. Pre-orders are available now at the Apple Store.

No mention of a contract just yet but I can almost guarantee a 2 year deal with AT&T, I am going to stop typing now and go reserve mine now, see ya!

1 TB Blu-ray Disk in the Works

BluRay

A privately funded company is developing a 1 TB, that’s terabyte, as in 1000 times as big as a gigabyte, optical drive and disk format which is compatible with Blu-ray. Holy shit balls. If this works, and people do have doubts, the size of video games will be astonishing. Rockstar had to fill 50 GB for GTA IV. Imagine what they would do with 1000 GB. GTA V: South America.  Click the link for all the tech jargon.

PS3 Tank Tech Demo

Tank Tech looks to be a pretty interesting game with a very unique use of the PS3 camera. I like how your artwork is imported into the actual game and you can even make your own unique levels to play on. I wonder what the limitations to the technology will be and how elaborate can I make my tank before the camera overloads? As someone who likes to draw and sketch, I am all over this one and think it has huge potential!

PlayStation 3 Head Tracking Demo

Remember that head tracking thing done with the Wii-mote? This takes it to another level. Stephen Totilo go to play around with the new technology at GDC.

Instead of strapping a Wii-mote to your head, this makes use the PlayStation Eye camera. Pretty damn cool. I wonder how long until we see this adapted into games on the PS3? It’ll see a ton of PlayStation Eye’s, that’s for damn sure.

The next Wii Phone?

New technology is always interesting and when it leads to more interesting video games it’s even better. In this video we see how a company has developed software to use the camera on a cellular phone to track movement and in essence make a cell phone into a Wiimote. The developer shows off a bowling title in which you swing your arm to make the ball go down the alley, pretty insane really.

Poll: What era of gaming is your favorite?

ConsolesAfter hearing MS brag about their best lineup in history it got me thinking, throughout the years we have had different eras in gaming and consoles, which is everyone’s favorite?

For some their favorite will be the newest cutting edge technology, the nostalgia of the old 8 bit consoles, the progression to 16 bit or the classic old school Atari days. This can be viewed from many aspects like, games, hardware or just pure preference.

For this editor I think my favorite era of gaming has to be the NES and Sega Master System days. This opened the world of gaming to my eyes and got me really hooked, I can recall spending hours playying Ninja Gaiden and Contra, while discussing with my cousin which was the better system between the two. (I was always the Nintendo owner)

What do you guys think?

Changing Times of Gaming

Old SchoolWith my new addition to my gaming stock, I currently have a Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and a DS now. Each with it’s own pros and cons, and just showing how big of a game junkie I am. What really struck me the other day as I hooked up my new PS3 to the HDMI slot in my TV was the drastic change that gaming has taken in the last few years.

I was now hooking up my systems into a HD television via either component cables or HDMI, which in the past I used to just hook up my NES into Red/Yellow/White inputs, shoot I thought I was cool when I got an AV switcher and could go from my PS1 to my GC or Dreamcast by flicking a button. Now I do this from my television remote and it’s numerous AV inputs in HD.

Not only have the hookups changed drastically, but just the mind frame in general. Gamers are now interested in the FPS (frames per second), HD capabilities, size of HDD and wireless connectivity. Right now I have the Wii, PS3 and my Xbox 360 all running via wireless networks, not to mention my PSP and DS as well.
